Question

Optimizing Lightroom Catalog at 12+ hours

Hello,

I have Lightroom Classic and a subscriber. I'm optimizing my catalog, it's currently at 12+ hours and still going. The last time I successfully optimized was Aug and took ~1 hour.

My system:

Catalina 10.15

Macbook Pro

2.9 GHZ 6-core i9

32 GB

Radeon Pro Vega 20 4GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

4TB hard drive

The processors are active between 77% - 180%

Lightroom Classic is using only 79.6 GB of memory

Swap is 33.75 GB of 35 GB with no page swapping

System pressure at 35%

My concern is the optimization is hung and thrashing without making any progress.

Is there something i can do or do i need to wait it out?

Regards,

DS

Syncing to the cloud? Does the catalog have some odd sync scheduled/running that is not complete?

No Luck. Had to do a forced quit.

Started again and this time syncing says 42 (might not be revelant.)

Also, I opened another catalog and it optimized in a few minutes.

    Thanks David

I added LR to Privacy. Stopped restarted app. This time I see it syncing to cloud. Which is new from the countless restarts and optimization.

    Started optimization and fingers crossed....

Double check the hard drive your catalog is on for user rights. Sone Catalina early implementer found that the OS upgrade modified privildges.Or perhaps Lightroom's rights to access the hard drive.

I moved all of the temp LR files into that TEMP folder. I think LR is smart enought not to read or be bothered by it.

LOL yes 658.89 GB of Smart Previews. It's needed. I have 18TB of images on Drobos. Yes 18 TB and I want to have access to each and every image when I am not connected to the Hard Drives.

I have been with LR since the beginning and cursed it because I could'nt do what Smart Previews does currently. All I wanted was to be able to curate and edit remotely. Smart Previews did that for me. Thank you Adobe!!!

Also, at the end of last year I had over 1 Million images in my one catalog and it purred away.  I downsized my catalog this year after getting my new Mac and im currently north of 792K.

I say this because I have used my one catalog for years with optimization under an hour taking place once a month. I believe this time was related to a very large clean up of collections not completing....I abruptly powered down my laptop (long story) during the operation.

    Thanks,

    DS

Now following is just for curiosity, that Temp-Files folder , just some folder of yours having nothing to do with the lightroom program

My "casual observation" also, if I may-

658 GB of Smart Previews!  Are your original camera files not always connected to need these?

    Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .
