Question

Order of pictures after import and renaming

Hello Community,

I have aproblem with importing pictures into Lightroom.

I just recently came home from a trip with about 4.700 pictures. As usually, I tried to import these into Lightroom with my usual settings:

Copy files to a drive, apply the standard lens correction and rename the files based on the overall numbers of pictures imported.

The problem now is that no matter how I have the files sorted in the import prompt (by file name or by the date the pictures were captures), files are randomly renamed. Up to now the files were renamed to the overall import number but remained in the same order (example: three images named by the camera DSC-01, DSC-02 and DSC-03 were renaimed in the past to let's say Holiday_580, Holiday 581 and Holiday_582, but the order was the same). This actually leads to the problem that pictures belonging to a panorama or a HDR bracket shot will have completely different file names, although were taken closely at the same time.

I can have Lightroom sort the files (after import) according to the time the pictures were taken and the three example pictures from above will show next to each other, but I want the file names to be accordingly like it was before. Apparently Lightroom renames the files but not in the order the files were sorted before I hit the import button....

I already have tried to import the files from another storage (SSD instead of SSD) and have them copied to another storage (internal SSD and to a external SSD), I have tried sorting the files differently in the import prompt and setting back to capture time (and also changed the sorting to Z to A and back) just to make sure Lightroom really sorted the files again, but no luck.

I have also tried this on Windows and Mac, but both show the same problem.

There seems to be a bug in the sorting and renaming part of Lightroom..

Any ideas? Your help is highly appreciated!

Holger

Hello,

I also noticed the same problem. I recently switched from Lightroom v6.14 to the Lightroom Classic v12.4 subscription model. It still worked in the old version. The new version behaves as you described. I have now solved the problem by only renaming the photos after the import, then it works. Of course it would be nice if this would also work during the import. I hope Adobe fixes this bug.

i recommend to not let LR do any renaming, especially when having a large volume of images within one single import. i've experienced problems with doublets when e.g. using two cameras having incidentally the same filenames. and also this unreliability when using renaming methods. so my best practice for several years is to use a small travel catalog when i'm on the road and saving all images from their cards onto a travel ssd. here i do all the keywording and collection sorting (already prepared to be sorted into the main catalog collection sets at home). after coming home the whole content from this ssd is transferred to my photo raids. after importing the travel catalog into the main catalog i just switch the file location to the photo raid and sort the images into the collections and sets and my travel photos are nicely integrated into my overall photo data.
when it comes to renaming i recommend professional renaming utilities like https://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/index.html (i'm using it on my mac for many years).

By the way, I am using Lightroom 12.3 on Windows 11 with all the latest updates.
