Overlay no longer appears automatically when masking

I don’t know what I did but color overlays no longer appear automatically when creating a mask. I have to click the “show overlay” box. When I make the next mask the box is unchecked again. Previously the mask would automatically show and I’d have to uncheck if I didn’t want to see the colored area.

I’m sure this is an easy fix but haven’t found the answer searching Google. I haven’t changed any of my settings so I suspect I unwittingly  hit a key combo. How do I  to get back to showing the color overlay by default?

I’m guessing, and its probably very unlikely, but I ask anyway: are you accidentally pressing the letter O after you go into the masking?

If no, you are not accidentally pressing the letter O (which is much more likely), and the overlays doesn’t appear the next time you go into masking, then this may be a corrupted preference file. Please see if this helps. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/, and pay attention to the advice “ * Moving or renaming that preferences file, rather than deleting it, means you can put it back if it doesn’t solve the problem, to save you recreating your preferences again.”

Thank you. Looks like my preferences were corrupted because the reset was the fix.
