Question

P: Canceling import with the source folder as target will wipe data

Good evening,

i sadly encountered a bug while trying to import my pictures from the evening and lost them all.

How to reproduce it:

Plug in your usb-storage (in my case Sony a7rV with SD-card over usb-c)

go to the import page and select "Copy"

select your target folder to be the source folder

press import and cancel the import during import

Every picture not already imported will get deleted

Expected: Imported files get deleted with source files untouched.

What happend: Source files of not yet imported/backed up files got deleted.

Lightroom Classic (Version 12.1)

Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19044 Build 19044)

I am sorry to hear about your data loss.

When you set your import dialog to Copy where Source and Destination are the same you should see a warning on the SD Card Reader Header and if you hover over it you will see this warning:

Did you see the warning?

Was this a mistake or were you intending to copy back to the card on Import?  Generally, an LrC Catalog with items on an SD card is not a recommended practice. It may be that canceling an Import has similar ramifications.

I did not eject the sd-card nor turned off the camera. I only noticed the loss of data when i wanted to import them again.

I also tried this multiple times with a folder on my desktop with the same result of data loss. This has nothing to do with the SD-card.

I did not notice the warning. I do see it now when i explicitly look for it. I also need to exactly hover over the tiny symbol for 3-4 seconds to get the written warning displayed.

This warning and the issue i am having are two seperate topics.

I attempted to replicate your issue but was unable.

  1.  Import from SD Card with Images
  2.  Select  numbered folder inside DCIM folder on SD Card from Devices
  3.  Set destination to numbered folder inside DCIM folder
  4.  Cancel Import at the 50% mark
  5.  Inspect card

All images are intact.

Perhaps if you could create more complete step-by-step instructions and include screenshots of both the left and right panels of your import dialog.

Again, I would question the workflow. Importing from and to the same SD card feels like a dangerous workflow.
