P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

Betreff: Generatives Entfernen blockiert legitime professionelle Fotografie (Stillmotiv)

Sehr geehrtes Adobe-Support-Team,

@Hakan Shutter Pirate an image of a breastfeeding mother is completely blocked. The area to be removed concerns only part of a wall in the background.

Many people have complained about this over the past year and a half, but I haven’t seen a response from Adobe.  This forum’s AI gives a good summary of my previous posts on the issue:

AI Answers

The phrase "repressed Victorian" is used humorously in the Adobe community to describe the strictness of Adobe's Generative AI content moderation. Users have noticed that the AI often blocks or fails to process images with even the slightest hint of skin or small children, leading to a high rate of false positives for content that is actually innocuous and professional. This behavior is likened to the stereotypical prudishness of the Victorian era, hence the term "repressed Victorian."

For example, users trying to remove people or wrinkles from photos sometimes receive failure notices due to these strict guidelines. The AI's sensitivity can make it unsuitable for certain types of professional work, such as artistic nudes or family photos, even when the content is entirely appropriate. The community has noted that even famous photographers like Edward Weston would have struggled to use these AI tools under such restrictions.

If you want to review the specific guidelines, you can click the small "?" icon in the upper-right corner of the Remove panel in Adobe's software and select Generative AI User Guidelines.

Hi
Just tried the function:

Why is the Auto masking (people) not combined with the AI-removing tool (or maybe I missed something?)
The masking function works perfect, but then I have to mark the person manually and click “AI → Remove
(The AI recoginition is unfortunately not as good as the masking tool.)
It would be easier to click masking → people and then → remove

Thank you

Generative remove has a few times now put a solid black replacement for the spot removed. I had to try three times to get it to work. All three variations were all black too.

I don’t know what happened the last update (maybe 2 months ago) but ai removal tool has gone way downhill. I will remove things off of white walls/table clothes and get grey or black blocks. But the WORST thing is before the update I could use the ai to remove things on people's faces (hair going across teeth/eyes, remove hair fly aways from the top of someone's head,  etc and it worked phenomenally, now when I attempt to remove anything like that it will pick up area I didn’t even select near it or change the whole eye, smile, etc. Its awful. Really hoping this will be fixed soon.

@Brynn244646360put, re the black replacement patch, a number of people have reported this, and Adobe acknowledged the bug a couple months ago:

Please add your details to that bug report, attaching the original unedited image, the screenshot, and the output from the menu command Help > System Info. If the forum won't let you attach the file, upload it to Wetransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive or similar free service and post the sharing link.

The more people adding details, the more likely Adobe will prioritize a fix. So far, no one has added their details to that bug report, so don’t be surprised if Adobe doesn’t fix it any time soon.

@BishR i cannot exit the removal brush. it does not respond. i usually have to wait for a minute before it responds.

Here are a couple steps to try. If they don’t help, please start a new thread with the output of Help > System Info. That will make it more likely others might see your post and have good ideas.

1. If the problem persists, try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

2. Try updating your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site, rather than relying on Windows Update or a manufacturer's update utility:
https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let us see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.

It sounds like Lightroom is getting stuck in the removal tool state, which usually points to a temporary performance or preference issue.

First, try resetting Lightroom Classic preferences — this often fixes tools that stop responding. After that, restart the app and test the removal brush again.

If the issue continues, update your GPU/graphics driver directly from the manufacturer’s website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel), not through Windows Update. Outdated or incompatible GPU drivers commonly cause lag or unresponsive tools.

If it still doesn’t respond, share your full Help → System Info details in a new thread. That will help identify whether it’s a hardware, driver, or version-specific problem.

Remove AI did a nice job of cutting off an Exit sign behind a performer but… when I ran Denoise afterwards,  Denoise did not apply to the removed area.  Lots of color and contrast noise still there.

Windows, latest LR, powerful computer with lots of ram.

Since the last Lightroom update, the three AI suggestions constantly show a black spot instead of an AI edit. It's awful. Instead of getting better, it gets worse with every update!

@vincentr36861937, see this previous reply:

Note that no one has upvoted or added their details to the bug report about this, making it less likely Adobe will prioritize a fix.
