This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

I love the new system, it works well and gives photos even more quality. One thing I did notice is that Lightroom will sometimes freeze when the Lens Blur is applied. It could take up to a minute for it to work again. Aside from that, it works flawless in my opinion.

Very good tools but low performance.  Hope Adobe can improve it.

I'm enjoying the Lens Blur tools. Quickly, easily, and mostly intuitively achieve great results!

A couple of things I thought would be nice to have as I used the tool.

  1. I'd like to have an Eye Dropper to pick varying blur settings so that new painted areas will match.
  2. The ability to adjust the blur amount of all areas falling in the same blur depth. Maybe along the Depth range values could be a curves handle.
  3. I like that after you paint Depth you can adjust the blur amount, but the ability goes away when switching over to a different control such as Focus or if toggling the Lens Blur effect off, etc. Maybe similar to having multiple masks, I'd like to be able to retain a painted section to be able to adjust its blur level later without re-painting.

Negative spaces (e.g., the interior spaces of loops of rope or spaces between branches that optically intersect) that reveal distant background elements should have blur applied but are often erroneously excluded from the effect.  The process treats them as if they were part of the foreground subject.  It's a decent first pass but making revisions to scope of application easier for the user rather than making the AI better might help to get the function market-ready.  Welcome enhancements to the AI could follow and be well received.

I would add a brush option to manually add precision to the selection.

Generally its great! I'd like it if it could also be part of the masking tools. So you could more easily blur foreground and background
