This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

I'm using it exclusively on cars (LRC) and overall I'm finding it to be extremely effective. The only issue I'm having is when the background includes the tops of trees against the sky where the very top branches are detected as being much further behind the rest of tree. Easy enough to mask out, but it would be fantastic to see this improved. Very usefull where I want to seperate the subject and background more than I was able to achieve on the shoot. Using Sony A7R IV, Nvidia GTX1080TI (latest studio drivers) and Windows 11 with no issues and working as expected.

It is not working like the photoshop lens blur options, it is behaving like an iphone blur, which I don't like.

Details: In my case I tried it on a dog portrait on a trail with trees behind the dog, the dogs ear and fur were getting cut out a bit; and the blur didn't seem to have depth of field transition, it went dog focus and background blurred at the same level, just like iphone does.

I am still happy to see that it started to be added on lightroom.

seems like a potetially usefull tool. however, its making lightroom so slow to use now.im on a nearly new imac.if this persists i will have to revert back to a previous version (if possible). never had a single issue before the update. and yes, my mac is up to date.

Once you applied lens blur (or not), it should not keep the rest of the Lr slow. If you bring up the Activity monitor, do you see any activities there? It could be Lr is running some background process to keep the catalog up-to-date?

I was excited to try this feature to increase the blur of my background, but I don't see any difference when I adjust the slider.

For testing, try boost the blur amount to the right most point and press the eye icon to toggle the effect on/off to see if there is any difference. Then try to alter the focus range.

The tool will be very useful. The control over the blur (depth of field) is nice! My only concern is the effects the setting has on the edges of my portraits. My client's hair is no longer smooth. So, my only suggestion is to refine the edges.

So far, amazing.

While there's a lot of control currently to create your desired look, it'd be brilliant if there were fast choices for different lens mimics such as 85mm, 90mm 105mm, etc

This tool will be amazing. An issue I have spotted is that sometimes you cannot tell LR to override a blurred spot. On the visualize depth tool, it shows that part of the pant leg is blurred, and I cannot use the focus brush to override that.

You can try out the Refine tool. Expand the Refine collapsible widget in the lens blur UI to play with the focus/blur brush. Checkout Julieanne's nice tutorial video.
