This post is applicable to Lightroom Classic.

ETAs for tethered support for specific cameras are not available.

Tethered Capture is a feature of Lightroom Classic that allows the direct connection of your camera to the Lightroom desktop environment. Images are imported into your Lightroom catalog as they are captured via the connected camera.

New camera support for reading the raw files is generally added quickly after a camera is released by its manufacturer.  New camera support can be verified here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

Tethered support for a particular camera model normally follows a version or two after the raw file support. Adobe relies on the manufacturer’s (Nikon & Canon) SDK (Software Development Kit) to facilitate the tethering of your camera to Lightroom. The timing of the release of a manufacturer’s support via their SDK greatly affects the time to release for tethered support. In addition, Adobe goes through a rigorous process of integrating the functionality of the SDK and tests tethering before support is announced.

To see if your camera is supported for tethering on your version of Lightroom, refer to this document: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

If your camera is listed, but your Lightroom version is too old, you may need to update or upgrade to enable tethering.

If your camera is not listed, and your camera’s raw file isn't supported, you would need to check with the camera’s manufacturer to see if they support tethering via their SDK.

Note: Not all camera manufacturers or models will necessarily receive tether support.

Hi!

It's seems it's not possible to connect lightroom with an canon R8 for shooting in direct mode.

Why?

do i have to wait an uptdate ?because it's a new camera, or it's going to be forever ?

I normally shoot on a Nikon D850 which tethers reliably in Lightroom Classic on my M1 Mac, albeit in Rosetta mode. I'm eagerly awaiting tethered support for the new Nikon Z8. It's essentially a Z9 which is already supported so hopefully it's coming in the next release. Meanwhile, I've started using CaptureOne which already has Nikon Z8 tethered support, but my trial runs out in 29 days, no pressure 😉 ... oh and if you can make it work without having to switch to Rosetta mode all-the-better 🙂

Your post doesn't mention, did you try the Z8 with the M1 to see if it works?

I know shooting tethered with the nikon Z9 is possible on a Mac, but I use a windows computer. I'm also going to use the Nikon Z8 soon and would love to use noth of them tethered on my windows computer in Lightoom classic.

I am complaining about Not having Z 9 support on windows for over a year now. Some days ago I frustratedly plugged the camera without any expectation. Guess what? The camera flawlessly tethers. It looks Adobe silently added it without updating the tethered camera list which is still in state of February 2023.

I would be curious If this works for you too. Try it and let me know! Otherwise, I learnt to appreciate nx tether which really works flawlessly and which has the advantage that the pictures taken will be transferred to the camera AND are stored on the CFexpress card in the camera.

A similar thing happened with my D850 and Mac setup, the tethering had faltered followiing a Mac OS update. Tethering reappepeared following a subsequent Lightroom update but it's nowhere near as solid as it was previously. I have eventually stopped carrying two Macs to jobs though!

When will you fix direct tehering to Lightroom for Canon R6 mark II? I don't want to concider Capture One. And yes I know about the import from a folder function, but that's not what I wondering about.

Agree.  The R6 Mk2 has been out long enough for Adobe to provide tether capability.

According to the official Adobe web-site, that camera is not supported for tethering: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/lightroom-classic/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

I still cant get tethering from the R6M2 directly to LRC to work - running the latest versions of software and firmware on the camera, LRC and EOS Utility on a new Windows 11 laptop. LRC doesnt recognise the camera and the camera screen shows an icon of the battery with the occaisonal flicker of an image.  If I use the EOS Utility to autotransfer files directly to a folder on the laptop and then get LRC to autoimport any new files in that same folder, the files eventually show up in the LRC library - but it's slow and clunky.

I dont see the R6M2 on the supported list for tethering so I guess that's confirmation that the functionality isnt there yet but is this capability something that WILL come in time?  It would be great in the LR compatibility tables for new releases if there was a column that said what version of LR supports tethering - with a 'not yet supported' if that is the case.

I am so very happy with my Canon R6 mk2... until I wanted to shoot Tethered with LrC... then realized, it's NOT my Camera, its Adobe LrC that is Broken.

I am very Adept with LrC and Canon Cameras, using both for well over 5+ years.  Tethering is a MUST in many different Studio Shooting situations, so when this didn't work, I went to the Canon community to find out if this was an issue with others or a unique issue and I am missing a new Setting with my R6 Mkii.  Turns out, this IS an ADOBE LrC issue.  Please FIX Adobe.

After WEEKs of trying new things, I reached out to my Local Canon Rep.... Here is the response... I posted.

My Local Canon Rep gave me these TWO workarounds... I have not yet tried them, but wanted to share them to DOCUMENT to ADOBE the ridiculousness and lengths we have to go through to get a Second Gen R6 to work with Lightroom.... even though Gen one R6 works fine without ANY MODIFICATIONS or WORKAROUNDS... Please ADOBE, Fix This!

Workaround #1 (Using EOS Utility 3 and Lightroom)

Make sure to Quit out of Lightroom Classic completely, and connect camera to EOS Utility 3

In EOS Utility 3 Remote Shooting option, go to Preferences

-> Linked Software

-> Register

-> Browse

-> Find Lightroom Classic Application

-> Open

-> check mark all image file types across the bottom

-> Click OK

-> Link Software to Adobe Lightroom Classic in dropdown

-> click ok

-> Reopen Lightroom Classic

When you take a picture now, keeping both EOS utility and Lightroom opened, pictures should auto populate and pull up in the download area of Lightroom, you are able to them click on and view them, once you take another picture it will bring you back to that same download window where they will continue to populate. It looks like once you follow these steps, it will save all of the preferences after closing out all of the programs and open them up again.

Workaround #2 (Only using EOS Utility 3)

If you just want to pull up images for client to see them larger without using Lightroom (minimize Lightroom because it will continue to pull it up if it is not minimized while still being used as a linked software), go to the EOS Utility Remote Shooting -> Other Functions (near bottom of the window) -> quick preview

Now photos will automatically pull up in preview after you take them.
