Partial restore from backup - is it possible?

I am going through my LR5 in preparation to upgrade to LR6.  I find there is a folder which according to the content of the hard drive once had 6,000 photos in the catalogue and about 6-700 were processed.  That folder in LR5 now has only 11 images.  When I research restoring from backup the impression I get is that my current catalogue will be replaced in entirety which I think will remove all work done since the date of that backup,  Is there a way I can restore the relevant part of the catalogue pertaining to that single folder?

Thanks guys especially to wobertc for the link to Victoria Bampton's solution.  Unfortunately i cannot find a backup that contains the missing work - I deleted all backups preceeding 2016.  So I must move forward and not spend time on what is now a lost cause without a lot of repeated work; and I do have the JPGs and TIFs from that earlier work so all is not lost.

I have bookmarked the link wobertc gave me - just in case!

    Appreciate your help

Backups are the complete situation of you Lr database at a specific moment. So when you uncompress your backup to a new location, you will get a "new" catalog. Open this catalog with lightroom and export what you need to a really new catalog. Now open the stanard catalog and import your exported catalog.

If this description is to compact, then I will do a step by step instruction when I have access to my computer.

Let me know if you need that.

Open the backup catalog in Lightroom. Select the desired photos. Then use the menu command File->Export as Catalog, give this exported catalog a name (do not check Include Negatives) and click OK.

Then, open the current catalog in Lightroom. Use the menu command File->Import from Another Catalog and select the catalog you just exported.
