I have a 2019 Imac (with 64 Gig Ram), will a newer Imac with a faster chip set but with 24 gig ram be an improvement? My current system is running kind of slow.  Thank you.

A current iMac with 24GB of unified memory will be an improvement, because the current M3/M4 Apple Silicon processors are faster than what any Intel Mac had. Also, a new iMac probably has better graphics acceleration than a 2019 iMac, depending on what graphics hardware is in the 2019 iMac. (Graphics acceleration speeds up features like the Develop module, AI masking, and AI Denoise.)

However, it’s important to think of this in context.  Although a current M3 iMac should be visibly faster than a 2019 iMac, the current iMac actually provides limited room for further improvement, because Apple has made the current iMac a relatively low-end computer suitable for homes, students, and offices. For one thing, there is currently no 27" iMac or powerful iMac Pro. The current iMac only comes with the base M3 processor, so you can’t get it with the more powerful M3 Pro/Max/Ultra options, and its maximum unified memory is only 24GB. This might be fine if your Lightroom Classic use is more casual, but it might be limiting if you rely on this computer for daily photography processing of higher megapixel images. If you like using AI Denoise, the iMac will be one of the slowest current Macs because its GPU has up to 10 cores only.

If you want a desktop Mac that would last a few more years than or be a bigger step up than an M3 iMac, consider a base model Mac Studio which is much more powerful (many more CPU and GPU cores, and 32GB unified memory). However, the Mac Studio doesn’t come with a display so you’d have to buy that too.

I have an M1 mini with 16GB of RAM and 256GB drive, all of my images and my catalog are on several external spinning USB 3 drives. My primary Photoshop scratch disk is on a USB-C SSD. I have an LG 24MD4KLB-B 24" 4K display via Thunderbolt and a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 30" display via HDMI. I'd love to move up to a Mac Studio if someone wants to gift me US$2000 🙂

Denoise takes about 10 second for 30MP files from a Canon 5D Mark IV, just slightly longer for 50MP files from a 5DSr. I have more than 350,000 files in my LR catalog and access is pretty good, although building previews could be faster. Once previews are built there is little delay. Files open and process quickly in Photoshop with no big stutters or delays.

I'm really pushing that little machine to the limit but so far its held up well. Just a data point here.

Will that limitation of 24GB of RAM could be a serious drawback? On a M3 iMAC, that cannot be upgraded.

Remember LrC is a resource hog, and Adobe only appears to make it want more, not less.

Currently, probably not. In the future it might be. 16GB is fine at present.

Apple will be announcing new Macs in late October or November. I'd wait until then, maybe look at refurbs too.

A new Apple Silicon Mac will be considerably faster than the old iMac. But there are specific bottlenecks- for example, where are your catalog and image files stored?

Final note- if you are buying a new computer, go for 32GB or more of RAM. This is future-proofing because you can't add RAM later.

Please tell us the specific actions in LrC that are running slow.

Please identify the specific "newer Imac" you are thinking about using.

Also please tell us the version NUMBER of your Lightroom Classic (we need the version NUMBER and not words like "latest" or "up-to-date")

I don't think this answers any of my questions.
