Performance problem on MacBook Pro 16 M2Max 96GB

I don't pretend to know whether this is a Lightroom problem, MacOS issue or just due to the architecture of the M chips. But when processing relative large images of around 80MB or more generated by the new Denoise tool, the image is displayed as all white or grey. Switching to a different image and then switching back will sometimes restore the view, other times it is necessary to restart Lightroom or even MacOS. A few months ago I read report by a professional photographer who had similar problems with HDR stacking of medium format images. The problem doesn't occur on Windows.

Is there anything I can do about this other than going back to Windows? I'm preparing to donate my Windows system as I don't want to run 2 architectures.

On the Mac the whole Lightroom app including images and work files is on the internal 4TB SSD with only backups on external drives. Whereas on Windows, the app is spread across 4 internal SSDs. Aside, the Denoise function doesn't work on Windows with only a 5GB video card. Lightroom just locks up.

Hey, @twometrebill. Welcome to the Lightroom Classic Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Please share a screen recording video & the system info of Lightroom from Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload at Creative Cloud files (https://assets.adobe.com/files) and share the link with us here.

Which camera's output files are you working with specifically? Do you work with multiple monitors?

To begin troubleshooting, test some variables like:

  • Unplug external drives.
  • Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor > Set it off if it is on Custom or Auto. If this shows you any differences, please check this article to troubleshoot further: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html
  • Launch Lightroom Classic or Lightroom in Rosetta mode once. (Open Finder > Applications > Lightroom Classic > Select Lightroom.app > right-click > Get Info or press Command+I on your keyboard. Check the box for Open using Rosetta.)

Let us know how it goes. Thanks!
