performance slow with my keywords

Hi:

I stumble over a strange behaviour of my catalogue when entering keywords. If I add a keyword to say three already added, that is I add the fourth one at the end, it takes a long time to find this new keyword in the existing list. However, if I add this keyword at the beginning of the entries, performance is smooth.

To illustrate: say we have a photo with

kw A, kw B, kw C

Now you add kw D as follows:

kw A, kw B, kw C, kw D   --> LR takes a long time to find kw D in the keyword list.

But if you add it

kwD, kw A, kw B, kw C    --> LR acts smootly and with the usual speed.

Anyone has an idea what could be the cause of this and how to cope with it?

2. far more: some 40'000 incl the synonyms.

That is most likely the cause of the problems.  LR has a number of long-standing bugs handling large keyword lists.

Is the list flat or hierarchical (with parent keywords)?

Have you tried restarting LR?

I haven't seen these symptoms reported before and don't know of any workarounds.  You might try my Any Tag plugin for keywording, which is designed for fast keyboard entry of keywords -- I know some people use it with lists of 50,000 keywords and more.

A couple of thoughts:

1. Is the Keyword List panel (right below the Keywording panel) open or collapsed?  If it's open, try collapsing it.

2. Do you have more than about 1500 keywords?

3. When this happens, is the current source All Photographs, a folder, a collection, a smart collection?  Does the problem happen when the current source is All Photographs or a particular folder?

thx for your ideas John, I appreciate.

1. no difference whether the keyword list is open or collapsed.

2. far more: some 40'000 incl the synonyms.

3. the current source is a folder.

I was thinking of a keyword list too big. But what puzzles me is, that the performance is ok, when you have no keywords set, so the first one is found fast. The workaround so far is: copy the three keywords which are identical to all pics in the folder, then enter them via "paste" in the empty field and add the fourth.
