Photo>Edit In... is grayed out or when it isn't doesn't work

I'm having a huge problem with the latest versions of Lightroom being able to export to Photoshop or any other software package through the Edit In process. Also the Photo Merge menu items are also unavailable.

This is a problem with having the choices either grayed out completely in either "Edit In" or "Photo Merge" or, if they are presented, simply not working.

I'd like advice on how to proceed. I see that one other user has reported similar problems but has not received and answer.

I can't seem to find a way to directly contact Adobe support for this issue. Some guidance there would be appreciated as well.

With the help of chat with Adobe Support I found that the image I was attempting to edit had become disconnected with its original. Once that was solved everything worked as planned. It's not clear why I didn't get more of an indication of the problem. But...it's fixed.
