Photo merge broken (again)

Howdy,

I face an annoying issue with photomerge (true for HDR and Panorama) since some days.

I noticed this in the (as of Septmber 26th 2025) newst version 14.5.1 on windows 11 home.

When I do a photo merge (as written regardless if HDR or Panorama) the process behaves weird.

The progressbar goes forward until around 90% then steps back and the a second process kicks in "Saving metadata" which seems to be stuck. In this state the processes are stuck:

Terminating the metadata process does not help the other one still is stuck. I can terminate the creation process also and the respective merged image is indeed created. Of course having terminated the processes no stack is created and the created image has no metadata.
Oh I tried with autosync on and off.

What I tried so far:

  • updating nvidia drivers
  • replaced the catalog with the one I know from my other laptop
  • downgrading to an older version such as 14.3.1
  • downgrading to the latest 13.x.x version (no success because database no longer compatible)
  • uninstall / install without deleting settings
  • nuclear option: uninstall / install WITH deleting settings
  • downgrade this also to an older version
  • update again back to 14.5.1
  • create a freshh test catalog and import some images

So with a fresh catalog it works again and I guess there is something wrong with my main catalog (which now contains nearly 100000 Photos). As we lose all edits I am not willing to start from scratch with a new catalog.
Is there any possibility to repair the catalog somehow?

Kind regards,

Stephan

Hej, hej,

so after several hours of importing the old catalog into a fresh one (Noel your message was too late - the import was already running for a while then...) Nr 2 was tried before without luck.

I was finally able to create one HDR image in the new catalog.

But looking into the figures of Metadata Status now gives the result that those are currently fluktuating.

Meaning that the number photos with "changed on disks" is going down while the number with "Conflict detected" is going up - also those with "Has been changed" is going up.
Seelecting i.e. "Has been changed" and trying to save metadata for one image as a test results in process being stuck - so the same state as with the original catalog.
BTW: After importing a catalog into a new one we seem to loose all the color labels for the directories (the color labels of the images are imported correctly). It would be hell of work to restore those for around 1500 folders so I would have to live with the fact those are lost now.
I have now tried to create another HDR but as expected having explained the above the result is the same as in the old catalog. The save metadata process gets stuck and nothing happens anymore.
So it is not a catalog issue (of course I will check integrity of the old catalog tomorrow as it is already half past one in the morning here in Germany 😉 ).
I think the root cause is that LR messes around with metadata in the background and then has trouble to deal with reading and writing metadata to files.
Working with smaller catalogs is also not really an option - well that's why Julieanne did her video originally...

Good night (at least for me),

Stephan

[EDIT] last update I switched to the original catalog with checking integrity which went okay. So it just opened after checking. Of course having same issues.
Any further ideas how to work on now? Not being able with photo merge is a show stopper for me!

Hello,

now that is definitely not possible to do wrok in my master catalog I decided for a preliminary workflow:
I created a working catalog where I want to import the images I want to work on from the filesystem and afterwards import it into the master catalog. Besides that will be a very cumbersome workflow the importing into catalog itself is - well not optimal. The dialog box is much to narrow and while when hovering over edges the mousepointer suggest you could make it wider - you cannot. Also you can only import one folder if you want to import a bunch of subfolders (in my case from my latest vacation) you have to repeat that process multiple times. Why not allowing selecting multiple folders much like in the windows explorer?

I really hope there will be a solution or LR gets much better dealing with huge databases.

[EDIT] I misunderstood the dialog and overlooked the checkboxes... My argument regarding layout still holds!

[EDIT 2] Some hours later...
For some weird reason my master database behaves like nothing happened. I am able to write and read metadata and hence the photomerge works again.
Just a wild guess: In the meantime (for other reasons) I have cleared windows' thumbnail cache and uninstalled a very old ms explorer codec (sagethumbs). Maybe that has interfered with LR?

Any thoughts welcome...

Regards,

Stephan

So what I tried now as a last resort is to maintain the metadata status of my photos by using metadatafilter "Metadata Status" on the entire catalog. This revealed around 16000 photos with conflicts, around 63000 with changes and around 200 changed on disk. So I decided to read / write metadata and ended up with what is already described elsewhere here:

LR wants to write XMP files for ALL of my catalog and as you see the metadata processes are stuck.
Ah what I have seen yesterday: When you pause xmp writing it is started from scratch when you unpause - I guess this is a bug (maybe that one where people reporting that xmp are written over and over again)?

So I will now just wait until LR has finished writing xmp files and see if that help...

Cheers,

Stephan

Hey, Stephan! Thanks for creating a detailed post with your findings. If the issue exists in a specific catalog and does not appear in a new catalog, you can simply duplicate the original catalog.

While in the New Catalog, go to File > Import from Catalog > point to the old/original catalog and proceed to merge, carrying forward the contents of the catalog. You can follow this detailed video: https://adobe.ly/4ngrUWW

Let me know if it helps. Thanks!

Hello Sameer,

thanks for the hint I will try that out.

In the meantime I have further finings from my investigations.

Now after severeal hours the xmp saving was complete but after restarting LR wants to write another 16000 or so xmp files.

Trying to maintain metadata leads to the respective process is stuck ( so when reading metradata that stucks and writing also) I guess this is the issue with creating photo merge - when trying to save the metadata LR gets stuck.

So will now create a new catalog and import the old one.

I let you know what the outcome is... will take a while
