Question

Photos moving in map module

I’ve spent YEARS thoroughly placing each photo on the correct location by dragging them from the film strip onto the map in the map module.
Only recently did I notice that when zooming in on my house for example, that the photos have moved around significantly, causing them to be placed on top of neighbouring houses etc. What is causing this to happen?

Adjusting all thousands of photos again would take a lot of time, and I presume it will be bugged once more.

I notice there are similar bug reports from many years ago, but they seem to be connected to Windows users. I use Lightroom Classic on Mac only.

We pay a lot of money each month for your products. This should be fixed immediately!

Anyone have suggestions for other software to add geo data to your photos?

Have the GPS coordinates changed in the catalog, or is the Map module not displaying them accurately?  A quick test:

    1. Select one of the problem photos in the Map module.

    2. In the Metadata panel to the right, copy the contents of the GPS field.

    3. In a web browser, go to maps.google.com and paste the GPS coordinates into the Search Google Maps box. Click on the Layers box (lower-left) to switch to satellite view.

Do the GPS coordinates show in the desired location in Google Maps?

    Good idea for testing it.
When trying out the above the coordinates on Google Maps are inaccurate as well.
So, for whatever strange reason, the coordinates are changed within Lightroom Classic. Usually it’s not off by more than 10 meters or so, but still. I want them to be precise.

This is the workflow I usually have with my photos.

    1. After editing them, I use drag and drop to place them on the exact location in the Map Module. Everything looks fine.
    2. I then write keywords for each photo I intend to export.
    3. I then export the photos, and import them into my Apple Photos app where I want the final photos to reside.

During the short amount of time between placing photos on the map, until exporting them, the location seems to change for a few random photos.

I read somewhere that dragging and dropping may cause this to happen, and that it's better to select the photos in the filmstrip, and then right clicking on the map and assign coordinates to the selected photos that way instead.
I will give this method a try and see what happens.
However, with a product as mature as Lightroom Classic there should be no issues with dragging and dropping the photos, in my opinion.
