Please help find lost catalog in LR4

Question

Today when I opened lightroom (LR4) I got a message something like it can't find my catelog and asked if it should open default catalog. I accepted it and found that it is an old catelog from several years ago. I then found that my external hard disc was disconnected. After I connected the external disc, I looked for the original catalog and cannot find it. I had never named my catalogs and had used only the what LR had suggested leading to all the old catelogs having similar names. I have tried all the backup catelogs and cannot find the catelog I lost. It has many years worth of edits. Can someone please help me find it?

First of all, have you tried going to File->Open Recent to see if the other catalog is listed? Is that catalog that Lightroom cannot find in your Recycle Bin?

What I'm wondering is why you are using so many different catalogs. I have been using Lightroom for many years, since version 2. I have my main catalog for all my digital camera images, another catalog for experimental purposes, and another catalog for all my old scanned images. In reality, those could all be combined. But I prefer to keep them separated that way for my own peace of mind. Any other organization I can do by creating collections and using keywords to take advantage of the database capabilities Lightroom has to offer.
