PLEASE HELP! "images are not recognized by the raw format support in light room"

I got a new Nikon D500 camera. I have the latest version of Lightroom (version 5.7 camera raw 8.7) that I bought via a disk. I've never had trouble with the SanDisk I'm using and can upload RAW (.NEF) images off the same disk shot with my Nikon D750. I can see a preview of the images, but they will not upload. The same amount of time goes by, as if it is uploading, but at the end I get the message "images are not recognized by the raw format support in light room."

I shot a few images with the D500 in jpg and they uploaded no problem, but I do not shoot in jpg.

The permissions are set to "read and write" for the card.

I tried copying the images onto my hard drive and uploading from there.

I tried "import" in lightroom.

I tried dragging them into lightroom.

All result in the same fail and same message.

Thank you.

    Cameras supported by Camera Raw

You have the most up-to-date version of Lightroom 5 but it is not the latest version. That is Lightroom 6.12.

The D500 was first supported in Lightroom 6.5 (and Camera Raw 9.5). Camera Raw is only used by Photoshop and Bridge. It is not used by Lightroom.

You'll never be able to open Raw D500 files in Lightroom 5.7 or Camera Raw 8.7.

    Your options:

    1. Join the Cloud and open the Raw files with the latest version of Lightroom CC, or
    2. Pay to upgrade to Lightroom 6 then (free) update to the current Lightroom 6.12, or
    3. Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all D500 Raw files to DNG format. Then edit the DNG files (not the Raw files) in Lightroom 5.7. An extra step for you but no extra cost since there's no need to upgrade Lightroom if you use the DNG  converter.
