Point Color luminance range adjustment

Hi all,

I'm playing with the new Point Color adjustments and find that making changes to the "Luminance Range" doesn't seem to have an effect.

For example, I'm sampling the blue of a bright and clear sky. This shows the "Luminance Range" to be in the uppermost part of blue (correct).

Here's how I first sampled the blue color:

Next, I extend "Luminance Range" to the full range. The Luminance range visualization (the bar on the very right) doesn't change at all, and I'm still limited to the original shift that I can apply.

Am I doing this wrong in the Point Color tool? Do I have the wrong expectations? Or is this a bug?

When I sample the same color with a Color Range mask, I can (obviously) move Exposure all the way down to -4.00...

This is on macOS v13 using Apple Silicon.

Thanks

Alex.

The HSL Ranges do not change color, simply help to select it.

Using your example the wider the Luma range, the more blue luminance is sampled within the possible range.

You must use the HSL Shifts sliders to change the colors OR drag the circles in the color fields.

It will help you to hold Alt/Option as you drag the handles to visualize the range IN the image and in the UI.

The HSL Shifts doable ARE NOT based on the range sampled but on the position of the "Point" in the Color field.

The color we change IS refined and limited based on the ranges.

If you want to sample a very specific color you must contract the ranges.

.Conversely if you want to sample more you must expand them.

.The HSL Shifts will affect ONLY the color defined by the ranges BUT move it across the entire given color field.

Screenshot below makes it clear.

I am moving that tiny range of colors to a different point in the field BUT the HSL shifts are not limited to that range.

Hope now is clear.

Thank you for the very detailed reply with the many illustrations.

So my mistake was to think that the various range sliders affect the range of possible adjustments, while it's the range of the sampled area that is adjusted with them. Got it! (duh me, yes 😅)

Which also means that the range of adjustments is always fixed.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

Alex.

Indeed and this is a limitation of the tool indeed. You can't do a 180 degree hue shift for a color with it but only more subtle shifts.
