Print module: the image canvas is now much smaller than the full print window size

I’m on a mac powerbook, Sequoia 15.8, and LRC 15.6, and using Epson Surecolor P800 printer

All was working fine. Then, suddenly I find that there is a smaller canvas in the print module where my image is displayed, rather than the full canvas screen it should be. I have tried multiple things to fix: removing the custom printer plist, re-installing the print driver, removing and re-adding the printer. Nothing is fixing the problem.

@Andy50B6   I thank @Conrad_C  for the answers given,  (I have been away!), but now I think I have the answer you seek (if it wasn’t mentioned elsewhere.)- And it has never changed!

You can change the ‘color’ of the UI background by a [Right-Click] just outside the photo cell and on the background area-

You possible have the background set to ‘white’ that will show that grey drop shadow- otherwise a white print on a white background would show no delineation. Examples below.

    Background ‘Color’ Menu
    Grey background
    White Background

    Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.6, Photoshop 27.8, ACR 18.7, Lightroom 9.4, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .

Thank you! That is exactly what changed. I must have clicked on the background area by mistake. I put it back to the grey that it always was. I knew something was different. Thanks for saving my sanity!

This doesn’t look wrong to me. What you call the “subframe” definitely represents the selected paper size and its exact proportions. The proportions of standard paper sizes are unlikely to exactly match the empty space between the top/bottom and left/right panels, so Lightroom Classic must draw a rectangle representing the proportions of the Paper Size you selected, accurately showing you how your photo(s) compose on that specific page size.

To prove this, in Page Setup change the paper orientation to Portrait (vertical). You will see the paper size rectangle change to a vertical orientation, which is exactly correct.

As shown in the demo below where I preview and apply different print templates from the Template Browser, that “subframe” is not sub-anything. It is the selected paper size, and this is easier to see if you secondary-click the background and choose a darker Background Color such as the Medium Gray selected in the demo. To change that paper size rectangle, in Page Setup select a different orientation or Paper Size.

You can also see that if the rulers and other options are enabled in the Guides panel, they clearly change to keep up as different print templates are selected.

I could be wrong but I don’t think this has changed, because Lightroom Classic has always had to show the exact proportions of the selected Paper Size; it would be wrong if they didn't. It could be that they changed the default Background Color recently, but I’m not sure.

Conrad, thanks for the reply. I guess you are right. The image window does change to the right size and orientation. But I don’t remember this ever looking like this. The drop shadow seems new, and the size looks smaller. But I see this in your images, and if no one else is noticing a change, I guess it’s just looks new to me for some reason. Too bad I don’t have older screen shots. Could be I’m just going crazy :) BTW, the changing gif you posted is slick. How did you do that?

I replied just now, but I don’t see my reply so sending it again. (Sorry if it ends up being a duplicate).

Here are some screenshots with a borderless 4x6 page size and zero margins. First is with the orig 2:3 image. Second is with a cropped version (to 3x6) where you can see the smaller image frame. Third is the same but with the panels tabbed out, so you can see how the max image display is smaller than the actual full window. This drop-shadow “subframe” is new. Never saw that before.

Full 4x6, filling the “subframe” but not the whole available window

A 3x6 cropped version showing the boundary a bit clearer

same 3x6 but with panels tabbed off to see subwindow size better

@Andy50B6  No answer yet?  Can you provide some screen-clips that will illustrate your screen ‘canvas’ issue.

Have you re-checked all the options in [Page Setup] in the Print Module after re-installing the printer driver?

Here’s a screen shot. You can see the outline that looks almost like a drop-shadow frame. That’s the biggest area the image can go to.

Rob, any ideas on this? Do you know if anyone else is seeing something similar?
