Question

Print Settings from Lightroom Classic

I recenlty bought a MacStudio and Studio Display after having had a 27" iMac for 7 years. Today I went to print some 8.5 x 11 photos on glossy paper and the results were terrible. I am using Red River 68lb. Ultra Pro Gloss and printing to a Canon desktop printer. I have tried using  Profiles managed by the printer, Adobe RGB, Pro Photo RGB, Studio Display, and SRGB. My photos are flat, dark, and washed out. I tried it on some photos I had previously printed successfully from my 27" and the results were abysmal. I cannot figure out what has changed.

Any ideas on how to resolve this or what to try next would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Mac displays have changed a lot in 7 years. The Studio Display is one of the new Apple displays that uses an upgraded Displays system preference panel. When you look at it on your Mac Studio, which reference mode Preset is selected, and is it appropriate for photographic printing?

If you’re not sure, choose a preset such as Photography P3-D65. If that is brighter than your iMac was, consider creating a custom preset using a lower luminance value such as 100 or 110 nits to be closer to print.

My thanks to everyone who responded. I sincerely appreciate it. I called Apple Tech Suport and the problem was repairted by going into SAFE MODE, deleting the printer and rebuilding it. The technician felt that in transferring the settings from the 27" to the Mac Studio via migration something under the hood got jumbled.

You should always test output using good color reference images designed for that task. The color reference images RGB values are such they are set for output and are editing and display agnostic. Test the output this way and examine for the same color issues so we know it's not your image specific issues causing the problems:

If the prints are too dark then it would seem that one possibility is that the monitor brightness is set too high. Obviously, the monitor seems to not be calibrated with a hardware device. I just installed a new computer/monitor and am using a rather old Canon printer. I don't use a hardware device to calibrate my monitor. I downloaded a calibration print from the Internet and printed it without making any adjustments to it whatsoever. Then I adjusted my monitor to match that print as closely as I could. I know, print purists will scoff and frown at my procedure, but it works well enough for my needs. Probably isn't going to help you that much, but it's what worked for me. Depending on which Red River paper I'm using, I find that I often have to use the brightness and contrast settings in the print module of Lightroom Classic to get the results I am expecting.
