Question

problem with copyright date being overwritten when folder is synchronized

I use Lightroom as a catalog. All of my photos have a copyright date set as an import preset for the current year - in this case 2024.

If I export a file to a new name (for example to edit in Evoto) but in the same client folder, it doesn't automatically show up in my LR catalog - of course! I have checked the exported file to see that the copyright date is still 2024.

Next, I synchronize my folder to bring the exported file with the new name into the catalog. When I do that, the copyright date (in the Preset field at the top of the metadata box) is reset to 2018 instead of the original copyright date.

This sure feels like a user error somehow, but I don't know where to start looking. I have checked my LR preferences and catalog settings.

I initially thought it was Evoto doing it - NO. Then I thought PS was doing it - NO. Now I realize it is happening when I synchronize the folder.

Any ideas what it going on and how to fix it?

Thanks

Not sure if you looked at the following. In a differentmembersDiscussion, I was teasing something out. To cut to the chase, an import went poor. Turns out I had left a preset in the import dialog, a preset to apply. And if that is the case, when you sync folder to bring in one image, it apply's that preset.

Now if I remember correctly you are using the sync folder to bring in that photo from your PS edit. And some metadata is getting fouled up, specificallyCopyright.

Click on Import, over in the right side panels,  look at any preset being applied at import, perhaps a metadata/copyright one??

Next, I synchronize my folder

If you bring up that Synchronize dialog, you probably see something like this:

If so, then that bottom option I circled in my screenshot may have something to do with your Copyright, a bit of Metadata getting fouled up.

Wondering if you have some Metadata conflicts,, or issues, or problems.

If you look at the thumbnails in the frid view (Library) or the Filmstrip. Do you see something like:

That from:

or like this:

That from:

I did get that dialog and Scan for Metadata updates was checked. However, I don't have any icon on the thumbnail view and my metadata status show "not changed." I just tried it again with the "Add to the catalog" checked on the preset. It was added to the catalog.

The original phot  show this in the preset field:

The exported photo shows this:

Now that it is in the catalog, it seems like it doesn't matter what the preset field days. When I export the final image and look at the data (cmd-i), I see the correct copyright data:

It seems like somehow, synchronizing the folder was causing 2018 to be written to the preset field, when was then used on the export of the final image. Up until now, I felt like I had a good understanding of how LR works, but now... not so much.

Those first two scrennshots so a part of the metadata

. And they show a preset applied in the first, not the second.

But, what shows when you scroll down to the section that actually shows the copyright?

Not sure what Metadata set you are viewing, but in my example below I selected EXIF and IPTC.

This from a 2023 vacation Photo Shoot

Did you mean to show that this information was incorrect/missing?

it doesn't automatically show up in my LR catalog - of course!

First up, before looking at the end issue. An obvious question comes up. Why upon Export, your image is not being added to the catalog.

Please post in a reply a screenshot of your Export Dialog

Right - good point. I can solve that part of the problem.
