Problem with LR catalogue not opening on desktop

Hi!  I have a LR catalogue (saved on an external hard drive) that opens on my laptop but when opened in LR on my desktop says files cannot be found.  Both LR are up to date.  I have done this multiple times where I edit on both devides and this is the first time I've had this issue.  Not quite sure why it won't open on the desk top!  Any ideas?

It may be a preferences issue on the Desktop if it's a recent thing.

Make sure to back up as described, as if it doesn't solve the issue, you may want to restore the file.

I've tried that.  The catalgoue has "picked" or flagged images.  The problem is... I am unable to unflag or unpick the images as I go through and edit.  It happened in the middle of editing and no matter what I do... restart, adjust settings, reset preferences... I am no longer able to unflag or unpick images.  Not with the shortcut using the "u" button.  Not by selecting unflag.  Not but right clicking.  Not even in the edit, image...

It has just disappeared.
