Problems stacking

I'm learning Lightroom and have run up against problems stacking photos. I move between LR and PS during an edit, and when I first started using LR it would stack the photos when I closed PS and came back into LR. I must have hit a setting by accident because now it only stacks the PS edit when I am in "All Photos" view and not when I have applied a filter such as a rating. It's annoying because I mostly work out of the film strip that consists of just the top rated photos and not the entire shoot. But now I have mulitple copies of images side by side. LR won't even allow me to manually stack them. What am I doing wrong?

The Filmstrip presents a set of photos, but the source of this set may be of any of several types. And that affects what you can do with stacking. For example, if you were viewing a Collection Set or had highlighted multiple sources for a hybrid selection.

From Adobe help:

"Stacks are specific to the folder or collection in which they were created. The photos in a stack must all be from the same folder or the same collection; you cannot create stacks while in a smart collection or a published collection.

You can only view a stack in a folder when that folder (or other folders) is selected as a source, or when All Photographs is selected. You can only view a stack in a collection when just that one collection is selected as a source. Stacks are not visible when a mix of folders and collections is selected."
