'program not responding' on Large Catalogs

Using the most up to date LR classic on windows.  I notice it has trouble handing a large catalog, with about 1.5TB of images, mostly jpeg.   When I open the catalog, half of the time it results in 'program not responding' after waiting over 5 minutes.  I have tried multiple things including creating a new catalog, optimizing it etc.. but they only keep things going for the first few runs.  After that get the exact same behaviour as before.  This has been going on for years and during this time period I have used experienced the same problem on a new computer and new HD, so I have come to the conclusion that LR is unable to handle large catalogs.  I understand this is not something adobe is able to fix.  I am reaching out to see if there is a solution.  Breaking the catalog into smaller ones is a potential workaround but not a solution.

Hello,

Just a thought. Have you tried signing out of your Adobe account, and then signing back in again. Recently, I actually had this issue of 'not responding' (albeit for a few seconds) and my catalogue is much smaller. After signing out, and signing back in again, problem solved! So, just maybe it might be the same for you.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

Catalog size is not the problem. My main catalog contains 8TBs worth of images and LrC is performing very well.

If you see the same behavior on different computers that's actually useful information, because then you can concentrate on what they have in common. If you give us more detailed system info it might be easier to say something more.

Correlation is not causation.

Just because it doesn't work on your large catalog doesn't mean that large catalog is the cause. There are other reports here in this forum of similar problems. And, there are plenty of reports of people who have catalogs of 500,000 images or more running LrC with no problems.

As far as "I understand this is not something Adobe is able to fix", how could you possibly know that? Has Adobe said that?

Have you looked through the forum for similar problems? Have you checked to make sure your anti-virus is not scanning the catalog file or the photos folder? Have you checked the resource monitor when this happens to see if there is a resource issue? What else have you tried?
