Promoting folders on a mac

When I upload images from a card reader on my mac they are placed in an 11 level subfolder structure which makes it very difficult to see the complete date- based label. They are named by date as I wish them to be e.g 2017-10-05 but above them are 10 subfolders e.g. 2017-06-21>2017-07-01 etc leading to an ultimate parent of Mac HD. I want a) to remove all but one of the subfolders by promoting each one to the level above so that I have a purely date- based catalog and b) to stop LR creating these subfolders when I upload images. Any thoughts on how to do this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Follow the instructions in "Part 2 — Updating Folder Location" of this document: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders if you have enough space on your hard disk. The process involves using your operating system to COPY (not MOVE) the photos, then in Lightroom reconnecting.

If you don't have enough space to do a copy of all photos, you could try copying one year or month at a time and then following the instructions
