PSE2019 vs Lr

Hi!

I have been using PSE since version 4, have had 4, 8, 10 and now lately 13. Last week I chatted with an Adobe representative and decided to go for a subscription of the Photography Plan rather than getting PSE 19. Now I´m having second thoughts... Lr not working as I expected.

1) I have just imported all my photos from Elements 13 into Lr. The photos are not able to sort properly (I want them to show based on capture date), there is a mix of photos from 2015, then 2018, then 2011?! Not at all in the right order?!

2) In Elements 13 I have used tags/key words in the organizer in several "layers". Meaning a tag/key word called closest family, and subfolders with each of the family members. A key word called work trips, with subfolders for each trip, etc. When the tags have been imported to Lr, all the keywords are just listed underneath each other - no "keywords inside other keyword"?? A list of 1807 keywords is impossible to work with.

3) How does the organizer work in PSE2019? Is this still quite similar to Elements 13??

4) What is really the main difference between PSE2019 and Lr?? Better editing options in Lr??

5)I have seen several comments in the Forum that the combination of PSE2019 and Mojave 10.14 is not working very well?! Any updates on this?

6) Considering to download a trial of the PSE2019, do I then have to remove all other PSE / Lr software?

Appreciate your comments and help...

regards, kenneth

    1. Did you not import your PSE13 catalog? From the Library menu in LR Classic go to:

File >> Import a Photoshop Elements Catalog

    2. If you want to start over, choose File >> New Catalog

Choose a new name e.g. MyCatalog2 and when the empty library launches, try again.

    3. The Organizer is much the same except for the addition of auto-creations. In fact it uses the same SQL database as Lightroom Classic.

    4. LR Classic has all of the raw sliders missing from PSE and it integrates with Photochop CC 2019.

    5. For me PSE 2019 is working well. It seems to be older versions of PSE that have hit problems with Mac OS Mojave.

    6. No need to remove prior versions. Each version will run happily side by side.

I have also replied in PSE forum.

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for your quick feedback! I’m basically only working with jpegs, and have really enjoyed the organizer function. With 150k photos organizing is key. Based on what I have read in the varies forums and now on the homepage - I get the sense that PSE19 is what suits my needs the best. I´ll download the trial and check it out.

So, you are running PSE19 - are you also running on Mojave 10.14? You haven’t experienced any spinning color wheels?

    regards,

    Kenneth

I’ve not used PSE 2019 extensively as I use Lightroom most of the time on my MBP with Mojave. It’s best to test it yourself. Unlike CC apps the free trial for Elements lasts 30 days. If you like it, there is no need to uninstall upon purchase. Simply enter a serial number to make the software permanent.

You have to tell Lightroom to sort by Capture Time. View->Sort->Capture Time. Of course, this somewhat misses the point of the Lightroom Library module, which is to give you many many many different ways to organize and search. I almost never search by capture time, I search by keywords and other metadata.

So, you can organize these keywords into hierarchies in Lightroom. Drag and drop.

    4) What is really the main difference between PSE2019 and Lr?? Better editing options in Lr??

Didn't the Adobe rep explain this to you? Why did you switch?

There are lots of areas of overlap, and some things which LR does which PSE does not do. Go to your favorite search engine and type in: compare PSE to Lightroom.

    6) Considering to download a trial of the PSE2019, do I then have to remove all other PSE / Lr software?

No, you don't have to remove other software, PSE will work regardless. But if you are paying for Lightroom, you might want to consider cancelling that subscription.

    1) All my images sort properly by Capture Time. If I, and all others, have had any problem with sorting images in LR by capture time it is when the cameras was not set correctly. IE wrong date, time, AM/PM settings. Camera times, dates, AM/PM were not synced correctly.

    2) as far as I know Keywords should stay with the image and import properly into the LR catalog. Your reference to Folders is something that LR Does Not Do. There are no Folders in LR. LR is a Database program and References your images into the Database file from where they are stored on your hard drive. Also there are no Folder in the Keywording section. Maybe you meant something else?

3)Have no idea. Never used PSE.

    4) Have no idea.

    5) This seems to be the case every time Apple comes out with a newer version of OS X. Apple likes to BREAK other software, and even their own software, when a new version of OS X is released. This has been going on for years.

    6) Have no idea. I do run 2 versions of LR on my main computer, a Win 7 system. If you install PSE 19 I suggest you first make a Copy of the PSE catalog, or whatever it is called in PSE, and use that copy in PSE 19. So you don't damage your original PSE catalog.
