Random XMP files generated to Random Folders on MacOs Sanoma

I have updated to Lightroom Classic 13.1 on my Mac running Macos sanoma 14.2.1.  I back-up my files to a separate hard drive.  I compare the number of files on my main hard drive to the backup so that in case of a crash I have the original files and xmp files.  I noticed since the latest upgrade that Lightroom Classic is generating random xmp files to my main hard drive on different folders.

I un-installed Lightroom Classic and re-installed it. I still get the same results.  I am having no other issues with the Mac.

I have corrected the files on my main drive eliminating the xmp files that were created for these folders and exited LR classic and I reopen the program and it seems ok for awhile.  Then the next day I have a repeat of the problem but with different folders.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Is Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes To XMP off or on?

It was on. I just took it off to see what would happen.

In some situations, LR will update the develop settings of your photos behind the scenes, causing the .xmp sidecars to be updated. For example, when LR introduces a new develop setting, it doesn't update all your photos all at once with the default value of that setting. Instead, as it rerenders the photos, e.g. when generating previews in Library as you scroll past the photos, it incrementally updates the settings.

In other cases, recent versions of LR appear to get confused and rewrite the .xmp file for no reason anyone can determine.

Turning off Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes To XMP will avoid that, but then you lose the benefits of having .xmp sidecars.

And this is the point for anti-sidecar activists to chime in...
