Rating is applied to both images in compare mode

I am using LR Classic version 13.1 on a PC running Windows 11 home.

I am very dismayed with the new version to find that if I am running compare mode and have one image hilighted, it applies that rating to both images, thus negating the impact of doing a comparison.  It does this whether I use pick/reject or use stars.  Also if I select 10 photos I want to compare and I bring up two to compare and set a rating, it applies that rating to all 10.  Groan.  This is very frustrating.  Any suggestions?  When will this bug be fixed?

Do you have Auto Sync enabled (check the menu command Metadata > Auto Sync)?
