Question

Re-selecting photos in Lightroom Classic

I'm using the latest version of Lightroom Classic on a Macbook Air running the latest update of Catalina.

The problem is a case of "operator head space and timing malfunction", I screwed up.

I was importing photos and setting up collections. I seleted a group of seven photos to import, great, went to move them into my newly added collection. Only one was moved into the collection and when I ent back to re-import the remaining I was unable to do so as they were "grayed out" and not available for selection. The only thing I cold do was to rename them and re-import (just added a "-#" to the file name and moved on down the line. I know the answer is an obvious one, but I have not been able to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MIke

My suggestions and thoughts-

Import EVERY photo! Make full use of the DAM functions in Lr-Classic. Do not 'Pick and Choose' only some photos to Import! Lr is designed to manage ALL your photo files.

"Greyed out' images in the Import dialog indicates they are already referenced in your Catalog. You cannot Import an image file more than once (unless you force it). The "Greyed out' images may have imported to a drivr location you are not aware of.

Re-naming to Import probably means you now have TWO versions of the same photo in your Catalog. (AND two files on your hard-drive!) You just 'tricked' Lr into importing a second time by the name changes.

You do NOT "Move photos to a Collection"- Photo files are stored in Folders (see the Folders Panel) and Collections are simply lists of photos 'Collected' in one place for a specific purpose. (eg. Add photos to make a Book, Slideshow, pics of Grandma, etc). With Collections, you are NOT moving or changing anything with respect to the photo files location stored on the hard-drive.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.3, Photoshop 27.5, ACR 18.3, Lightroom 9.3, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .
