"Read Metadata from files" limited to 5 files.

I installed the latest update a few days ago.  This is for Lightroom Classic 15.

Ever since that time, when I try to read metadata from files, it never completes.

I can highlight 5 images at a time and successfully get it to complete, but if over 6 images, it starts and never completes.

I have been unable to replicate this reported failure on Mac or Windows.
There is likely additional information required to reproduce the failure.

The two separate threads are merged together.

I filed a bug report here that links back to this thread. Hopefully someone will see it sooner that way.

"Read metadata from files" reads the first 5 files succussfully and then hangs and never finishes. More details in this thread. https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-classic-15-read-metadata/td-p/15584241?profile.language=en

I have need of this for more than just Photo Mechanic.  I had thought that I had to read the metadata files, but maybe not.

However, I have some legacy lens that are pre-digital era lens that I sometimes use.  In order to get the lens make and model in the metadata, I have to use a Lightroom plugin that edits the exif data to plug in that information.  The procedure for this is to first select all of the photos that used that lens, write the metadata to the xmp files, then run the plugin, which edits those xmp files, and then I have need to be able to read metadata from those files so that Lightroom will then have the make and model of the lens used on those photos.

So I still need to be able to read metadata on more than one file at a time.

Having the exact same behavior. 5 is the most I can successfully read the metadata from. Otherwise it does 5 and then never completes. I need this for doing timelapses. Level smoothing is applied in LRTimelapse and read by LrC to be exported.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I hope someone can provide a fix.  I don't want to be told that Adobe provide a feature that doesn't work and/or that we shouldn't use.  That's not an answer.

I am on LrC V15.0

Lightroom Classic should automatically read any xmp files during import. Isn't that happening?

I just tested this with a small group of images I took of the monitors on my desk, After the Photo Mechanic ingest, I cropped a few in Photo Mechanic. I verified that Photo Mechanic created .XMP files for those cropped images.

Then I imported them all to Lightroom Classic. In the first import screen, the cropped versions do not show up. Once the previews are created, Lightroom Classic had automatically read the .XMP info, showing the cropped images the way they were cropped in Photo Mechanic.

I also made a quick test by Opening PM into a previously LrC imported folder. I cropped one of the images in PM, verified that a new .XMP file had been created in the folder. Next, in LrC, I selected the image I knew had been modified in PM, and in the LrC Metadata menu, selected "Read Metadata from File". Once LrC read the Metadata .XMP, the image was updated to show the crop that happend outside of LrC in PM.

How is your experience different? Do you have a lot of experience with Photo Mechanic?

after I load my photos from the card onto my computer.  I have them in a folder and I use Photo Mechanic and do some culling and then some setting of metadata such as captions and keywords, copyright, and gps location on all the photos.

Then I copy these images and their xmp files into a directory to be imported into Lightroom Classic.  At that point, I want to read the metadata from the xmps.
That is why I do a mass operation of reading metadata.

I am in the library modules at that point and choosing to read metadata.
In previous versions of Lightroom, this was never a problem.  After the most recent update, it is a problem.

Are you in the Library -> Metadata panel when you try this?

This seems like a non-standard use. Please explain exactly what you are doing and want to accomplish by reading multiple files metadata at once.
