Question

Reconnecting LRC to EHD and upgrade required but getting error message

For some reason my LRC didn't automatically connect to my EHD where I store all my files. So in order to bring up folders and editing into I had to select the location preferences to my EHD.

however, after that was done I opened LRC and it prompted me to upgrade. I selected the correction catalog destination but now the upgrade is taking hours. Not only that but over an hour into the upgrade it timed out and I got error message saying something went wrong so I started all over again.

gah! I just want to retrieve one gallery and export it.

1) can I access my catalog without upgrading? If yes, how?

2) if I MUST upgrade how do I get it to stop timing out? Also, how long does it usually take? My catalog is freakin' huge. I never had learned how to create new catalog to kept alllll my photos in just one. Gah damn it! But need advice to get through this.

    EHD = external hard drive

maybe my question should be: how do I successfully open an old catalog that was using an older version of Lightroom Classic? The catalog is from 2019. I took a photography sabbatical and trying to get access to my files on my EHD which is where LRC used to point to but then switched to my desktop.

Use your file manager, in Windows the File Explorer, in MAC Finder, and locate your desired catalog, then double click on it.

    (not the only way)

By the letters EHD, are you referring to External Hard Dive?

    I am. Any insights:)

I'm getting the error message while "Catalog Upgrade in Process" is happening after about 2 hours.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post if it helps you get responses.

Please explain what you mean with this. What 'Location preferences' are you talking about?

There is no reason why Lightroom would suddenly have to upgrade the catalog, so it sounds like it opened an old catalog rather than the latest one.

    Hi Johan!

LRC defaulted to opening a catalog in my computer. So when I plugged in my EHD I had to click on preferences > general > catalog location > select my EHD LRC backup catalog.

however, when I do this after two hours I get an error message.

Also, I am opening an old catalog so I assume it's not compatible to the current version of LRC? The catalog is from 2019 (it's a long story but I need the files from it).

After getting this error message a few times this morning I clicked on the Lightroom catalog back up I want to open (vs going through LRC settings as mentioned above). It looks like it's going through the same process of updating that catalog now but unsure what the result will be.

is it possible to open an old catalog without updating it? Meaning, is there an old version of LRC I can just use? I only kept one catalog for all my files so it's massive (I know lesson learned!).

    thoughts?

thanks so much for your help!

Catalog backups are zipped by default. If you selected a zipped backup as catalog to open, then the error message is as expected. Apparently Lightroom doesn't understand what happened, so now it is trying to upgrade the zipped file, which obviously does not work. Quit Lightroom (force quit if necessary) and make sure it opens a proper catalog file, not a zipped one.
