Same drive shown twice in Lightroom Classic

I experienced a situation where the same hard drive was displayed twice in the folders section of my lightroom classic catalog even though it was the same hard drive.

I started my catalog on a win10 machine. Started with LRC 9 I believe and upgraded my catalog along the way to 12. I built a new computer running win11 and transfered my files to it.

I used two main drives for photos.  On the old computer there was an SSD I downloaded from my camera to work on media, S:. On the new computer I just used the C: SSD and not a seperate SSD for temp work. I used the 😧 on my old computer to store the files after I was done with editing. It was also 😧 on the new computer but a slightly different path. So my work flow is camera to C:, edit files, eventually move folders using file explorer from c: to d: then go in and find folder location to new location on 😧 when lightroom realizes folder is missing.

I transfered my catalog and photos to the new computer and when I opened lightroom I saw a whole bunch of missing folders which is what I expected. I keep "show parent folder" on so I right clicked on the parent folder of my old S: drive and selected "Find Missing Folder", chose the new location where the files were located.I repeated that for the files on my old and new 😧 drive.

Everything worked fine on the S: to C: change. All my files were accessible and I was able to add new folders of images with no problem. On the 😧 drive however, I started to notice I had two 😧 groups in the Folders panel. It seemed that the old folders/images were in the top one, and new folders were on the bottom one. Both had the same volume name and drive letter in the accordian header on the folders tree panel.

I could access all my images fine, it's just files that were imported as already on 😧 were in the top 😧 and whenever I moved new folders from my C: to my 😧 and used "Find missing folder" after the file explorer move, the new folder would show up on the bottom 😧 This was very annoying when looking for old photos. There were also some issues like not being able to see the parent node from the bottom D:.

I was able to resolve the issue by going to the top 😧 and on each subfolder, right clicking and selecting "Update folder location" and setting it to the same location, since nothing really moved, I just needed lightroom to update it's metadata. That would move that folder to the bottom 😧 in the folders list. This was tedious as I have a lot of folders and I had to restart Lightroom a couple of times during the process because things weren't looking right until a restart.

It seems that when I did the first "Find missing folders" since both drives were 😧 Lightroom Classic didn't udpate whatever identifier it uses to recognize the volume since both drive letters were the same. Whenever I did subsequent Fild missing folders going from C: to 😧 it saw it as a different drive than the imported D:. In the case where the drive letters were different (S: to C:) it did update it. This should not be the case. Update folder location appears to do it correctly but Update folder location is not available if Lightroom can't find the folder.
