Selecting an oval area to edit

I recently migrated from LR 6 to the current LR CC. In the develop mode, what happened to the "circle" one could select to define and size a radius circle/oval in which to do some edits apart from the whole image? How is this done now in LR CC?

The user interface has changed for the Radial Gradient tool. You can see some of the details about the new Masking tools in LrC here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/whats-new/2022.html#masking. The radial gradient tool can still be accessed through this interface, or via Shift-M.

Adobe has confused a lot of people by their choices to name the software and then changing those names.

There is no Lightroom CC. Do you mean Lightroom Classic (LrC icon) or Lightroom (Lr icon)?
