Setting Up Lightroom Classic

Hello,
I just installed Lightroom Classic on my desktop computer.
I have photos on my desktop's hard drive as well as on an external hard drive.
I'm trying to figure out how to set things up so that I don't do all the work of importing all those images from my external hard drive and then later possibly have something possibly go wrong in Lightroom when my external hard drive is not powered on.
How should I first set up Lightroom Classic if I plan to import photos from both the desktop's hard drive and the external hard drive?

Thank you!

Just import the photos and choose 'ADD' at the top center of the import dialog. That means the photos are imported into the catalog, but are not copied or moved to another place. They stay where they are. If your external drive is not powered up when you start Lightroom Classic then nothing will go wrong. Lightroom will just tell you that the photos cannot be found and will show that the hard disk is not connected, that's all. If you want to be able to edits these photo nevertheless (without powering up the drive), then generate smart previews for the photos on the external drive.
