Setting up Lightroom to manage travel company photos

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some help if you would be so kind.

Firstly please allow me to explain my situation, and my needs.

I work for a small travel/holiday company and each week we have three trips running in three different locations, and our guides take photos every day. At the end of the week the leader sends approx 200 photos back to the office via Dropbox, per trip, and these show up in three separate folders on my computer.

I would like to sort these three sets of photos into their own dedicated folders, relating to that specific trip. I would also like to be able to search the ENTIRE load of photos across all trips and countries, and even include some keywords in that search too. Is this possible?

I have bought Lightroom but am confused about Catalogs and Collections.

Would someone be so kind as to talk me through how to proceed?

Many thanks, James

A Google search would point you to many articles on the difference between the 2 in detail.

But basically the Catalog is the Database file that LR uses to store locations of images on your drives, All Edits you may do to the images (but the edits are only visible in LR unless you export images).

A Collection, only visible in the LR program, are just LISTS of images grouped together for easier viewing and organizing. Any image store anywhere on the drives connected to your computer and imported into the LR Catalog file can be in any number of collections or in one or in none.

As for placing the images you already have stored on your computers hard drive into folders of whatever naming convention or trip name that is something you should do before you import them into the LR Catalog File. For new images you can move them, although only to one specific folder, at the time of import.

I suggest you do the placing of images into folders, subfolders, whatever level of subfolders, manually and then import them using the Add option in the import dialog.

There is a good search feature built into LR and there are other plugins, Add-Ons, that can expand the filter system.

Thinking about it LR may not be the best program for what you want to do.

For me I place my images into either Dated or Named Subfolders under a Top Level folders by years.

Then use the filter, search, feature along with Keywords and collection to view specific groups of images.
