Question

Since the 15.5 LRC update every time I create a mask the selected subject turns B&W and does not revert to color unless I undo the mask. LR works fine.

Any mask that I create in LRC the selection turns to B&W.  The only way I can revert back to color is to undo the mask.  if I leave the Mask Edit menu and go to Basic Edit menu, the selected objects are still B&W and all the sliders work as expected on the B&W object, i.e. if I change the Exposure slider the B&W object change brightness just as the rest of the image. This happens with both .nef & .dng files.

The Saturation slider was set really low.  I don’t recall moving it but must have right after I install the latest update.  My fault… that should have been one of the first places I checked.

    Thanks for the replies.

Since the selected objects stay black and white, the mask you apply has a desaturation or other control dialed in that desaturates the colors under the mask. The mask slider tends to remember the last applied settings in the mask adjustment so simply select a known preset in the mask treatment or scroll down and hunt for any adjustment that could cause desaturation and reset those. There is saturation in the color sub panel and there could be point colors defined that desaturate certain colors. Also check if the mask curves are all set to neutral positions. So just make sure the mask is actually doing what you want it to do instead of what the last edit did.

If your masked area remains B&W once you leave the Masking mode then this is not a masking preview, it is an actual adjustment.

Note: it is still possible to move sliders in the Basic panel, while the Masking panel is active. Pressing Esc key is one way to be sure you have exited from masking. Also, check which of the icons immediately underneath the Histogram is showing selected (highlighted in white).

If it does turn out that this B&W is a real persisting adjustment: this has been inadvertently set as a default for all new masks. You could set some different default instead (by the same method that was accidentally used to set B&W), including one that is fully reset. But a more convenient method is to click the “”Reset sliders automatically” checkbox in the Masking panel. Hereafter any newly created mask will begin with no adjustments at all: there will be no default used.

You may have enabled the B&W overlay under the mask overlay 3 dot menu. See below screenshot for how to select Color.

If above doesn’t help, then post a screenshot showing the B&W mask.
