Question

Slow applying metadata updates

  • June 2, 2024

I have seen posts about the windows version, but I am echoing that on the Mac (m1 max) that Lightroom Classic 13.3 has become incredibly, painfully, awfully, terribly slow. Its gotten to the point of being frustratingly unusable. This seems to affect every aspect of using it from applying metadata updates to moving through pictures. Other than downgrading back to the old version (if possible?) has anyone found any other solutions?

Glad I'm not alone. Lightroom 13 has been an unmitigatead disaster. The first completely broken version I've used since I started back with LR2. I have a TOP of the line Mac Studio Ultra M2 and I'm running Thunderbolt NVMe drives and this thing should be absolutely singing. But it hangs. Doing. Everything. All. the. freaking. Time. I'm waiting FIVE minutes on an export just to start right now. And that's after I waited 3 minutes for the export options dialog to pop up after clicking "export." It is almost 4am. I would have been done THREE HOURS AGO if this wasn't such a freaking mess. I've been dealing with this for months now, but I'm at my absolute wit's end.

Here's my stupid system info:

I am running Lightroom Classic 13.5 and the only satisfaction I have is that I am not alone with this problem. When I go to the next photo I have time to make a coffee and take a toilet break. Not very impressed with this.

I haven't been able to work effectively for weeks for this reason...
I have never seen such a bad and hindering situation with Lightroom since its first version....
Now contact remote support, they asked me to create a new catalog and the problem persisted...
Any slightest adjustment takes MINUTES, heavier functions then HOURS AND HOURS.
As if that weren't enough, they block the downgrade to previous versions (Catalog becomes incompatible)...

Please Adobe let me WORK.

Upgraded to 13.3 when it was first released, performance was unusable on my M2 Max.

I reverted back to 13.2, then yesterday "upgraded" to 13.4 thinking it had to have been fixed. Spent an entire day trying to wrestle it and optimize it. Idk what LR does when it upgrades a catalog (I shouldn't have to) but it is just as slow, perhaps even more so. I have downgraded to 13.2 again and performance has returned.

Do we just never get to update again? What's the plan Adobe?

Do you any collection synced in the cloud? As I had no absolute use for what was synced I completely wiped all that was in the cloud and started at zero in regard to syncing. Now 13.4 is worrking at the same speed as 13.2 before it was absolutely imposible to work with it. Something is up with the syncing of metadata and the new way of syncing they introduced with 13.3.

Couldn't agree more. I run LrClassic on a 2021 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and Sonoma 14.5.  It was SO SLOW, I had an Adobe Pro downgrade me back to Lightroom Classic 13.2 to have a functioning program.  I hear Adobe is working on an issue with the M1 chip machines....please Adobe, let's get this fixed. Thanks!

I have experienced the same. I am running Lightroom Classic 13.3.1 on a MacBook Pro with a 2.6 GHz 6-core Intel Core i7 processor and 16 GB and OS Sonoma 14.5. My son, who is a computer engineer, checked my system stats against the requirements for running this version of Lightroom and says I should be OK. Creating a mask using the brush tool is almost impossible as the brush stalls and stutters as I'm trying to paint. Annoying! I'm not sure what to do. Should I roll back to a lower version?

@Lynn Noelle, as a first step, please do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

Just to add another data point, I now have several clients with M1 Macbooks who are all seeing the exact same MASSIVE slowdown under 13.3 and 13.3.1.

Rolling LrC back to 13.2 brings performance back to normal on thsese units.

Here's the System Info from one of the affected units:

I suggest we all contact Adobe customer service and submit a ticket.
I reverted to LRC 13.2

Another issue with 13.3 was that sync error with the cloud could not
have addressed in the preference panel, but only on the web, as far as
I remember.

It is unacceptable that paid software that many use professionally has
these issues.

- we should ask Adobe to provide a tool to downgrade catalogs. In the
meantime an update without all the AI tools that supposedly slow down
the performance. 13.3 feels like beta software that is extremely
buggy.

Same issues here. LrC is very slow, almost unusable for me (with LrC 13.2 averything was smooth on my MBPro M2 Pro). And syncronization is impossible to use. The Classic doesn't sync anymore and the mobile version is very slow and made a lot on sync issues. This is simply unacceptable.

I shot an event last night. about 600 photos, culled to 300.
It took me hours to edit.

- moving a folder with 70 images was slow.

- writing metadata a crawl.

- Quick develop adjustmentsn on multiple photos (around 20) would take a very long time to show up. making me make mistakes (make cooler, decrease contrast, increase shadows etc)

- Standard previews take a very long time

- Exporting 300 files is so slow and buggy "preparing export" dialog proceeds very slowly.
- In the Develop module, I edit one photo, clich on another one on the film strip and the photo does not change to the one I selected.
- Saving metadata is stuck

- Syncing a folder of photos to the cloud gets me the message " you need to enable syncing" dialog box even if cloud syncing is enables.

SO MANY BUGS. this is unacceptable. LRC is worse than a buggy beta. Paying customers should be respected. I wasted too many hours lately on edits that should have been completed in 30 minutes

It must be a nightmare for wedding photographers who shoot 3000 images to edit this way.

It is unacceptable. I went back to LRC 13.2 which is faster than 13.3

Adobe should create a leaner version without all the AI stuff that slows it down and in the meantime a way  to downgrade a Catalog and Previews to LRC 12.5.

After updating to 13.3.1 I’ve been encountering more and more slugginess. Working on the first few photos is okay but then it becomes very slow. At a certain point, I got a system message that I ran out of system memory. So I had a look at the memory usage and you can see it go up by the second. So by the looks of it, there is a big memory leakage. I went from 5 to 30 GB memory usage in about 10 minutes, without doing anything in Lightroom Classic. Just open in the background. It makes it totally unusable 🙁 (iMac 27″, 2020, i5, 40GB RAM)

Having the same issue, I've loved LRC for years, but this is impossible to work with. Really at my wit's end with this right now, this job I'm working on right now should have taken an hour tops, it was taking so long last night I fell asleep waiting to move from one picture to the next

A week later and a bunch of other people seem to be experiencing these issues with no fix from adobe. Very disappointing. (Now on 13.3.1) turning off write changes to XMP does speed things up a bit but it still is significantly slower.

I downgraded to 13.2 and it is better, but nowhere close to LRC 12. I had a copy of the catalog for LRC 13.2 but not for 12

Exporting, writing to metadata, displaying adjustments in the quick develop takes forever.

Sometimes I change the profile from Adobe Standard to Adobe Portrait to a selection of 200 images, and some still have the Adobe Standard profile when i edit them individually.
So many issues and slowdowns.

Adobe Customer Support wanted full remote access to my computer to check the catalog. But I do not feel comfortable at that. My main catalog is 16GB, and CS rep said they can not allow uploads of such size.

I have been ol LRC since the first beta and this has been the worst upgrade. I can not use LR CC as an alternative, as the caption field is only one line, and I can not enter directly descriptive captions that include what/when/where and credit as required by my editorial clients.

The CS rep said in the chat conversation that the AI smart features of LRC 13.x use more resources. Some of those features are nice, but make the overall workflow slow, buggy and prone to mistakes.

Adobe should provide a tool to downgrade a catalog that was upgraded to LRC 13 back to LRC 12. The sooner the better, as I shoot every week for work.

LRC 13.3.1 was marginally better than 13.3. But 13.2 is better than 13.3.1.

Also I find unacceptable that a point upgrade, from 13.2 to 13.3 requires updating the catalog file. Only major releases should require that. My M1 iMac felt pretty fast editing videos and photos until LRC 13..

I turned off Auto Upgrades.
