Question

Slow Download Sync

Trying to migrate 1.1TB of Apple Photos to Lightroom Classic.  I've using the cloud-based Lightroom to sync all of my photos up to the cloud which took 2 weeks of trial and error but once I got it working the upload took a little over a day over my 1Gb symmetrical fiber connection.

Now, I am trying to sync them back to Lightroom Classic to an SSD drive and I'm seeing horribly slow performance.  It's like LR is sitting thinking about things forever, then it downloads a few files, and then sits.  Over the last 16 hours, it has pulled down only about 6 GB of photos.

Speed tests show I'm getting 900Mb or more throughput (both up and down) to my Mac so it's not my network that should be the problem.

I ran fswatch (a tool that shows changes to a directory tree) against my SSD starting yesterday afternoon and the output shows the behavior I mentioned above.  A log of its output is attached.

Why are you going through the cloud based Lightroom and not simply directly into Lightroom Classic? From Photos just export all images into a folder on your SSD drive and import that export into Lightroom Classic by using "Add" and you will be done. No need to go through Lightroom Cloudy. This should take very little time as you don't have to go upto and back down from the cloud.

Oh and from Photos I would generally use "unmodified originals" as the export format to make sure you get highest quality and any raw files if you had those in Photos. You won't get any edits you did in Photos in that case though.

As far as I am aware LrC (Classic) does not sync video files up to the Adobe Creative Cloud storage. I have never tried syncing video files to the Creative Cloud Storage from my mobile devices.

FYI: I'm not syncing TO the cloud as Lightroom (non-classic) already has done that. This is all downloads from the cloud to my local drive.

Ok so did you use the option in Lr (cloud-based) to retain a copy of the original images on your disk?

If you did then the originals will not have to be downloaded when you select the sync option in LrC.

Please check your Lightroom Classic (LrC) preferences > Lightroom Sync tab and it will display the folder name where the image files will be downloaded from the Creative Cloud storage. Original files are downloaded.

Make sure the Disk where the folder is located has sufficient free disk space to accommodate all the images.

See the screen capture.

The drive has a 2TB capacity with 1.9TB free.  The library is 1.1TB

FWIW, I quit and restarted LRC and that seemed to kick it into gear for a moment, downloading a few dozen files but it still is sporadic.  For example, it pulled 23 jpegs and then sat for 20 minutes, then it pulled 20 more + 1 mov (mov was 276MB), followed by another 20-minute pause and then 13 jpegs.   6 minutes later 11 more jpegs.

The jpegs in these cases are all between about 4 MB and 8 MB in size.

Continuing issues: The sync I have ongoingly running has not downloaded a single image in over 22 hours!  My logs show just a slow tickle of directory and info.lua file creations. The last image downloaded was at Sun Mar 27 10:11:35 2022, the current time is 08:20 the following day. This is ridiculous.

FYI this is LR Classic 11.2 on Mac OS 12.3 running on an M1 Max MacBook Pro with 32GB RAM and sending files to a Sandisk Extreme 2 TB SSD attached directly to a USB-C/Thunderbolt port and using a 10Gb SFP+ adapter (via Thunderbolt) and through 1Gb symmetrical ATT Fiber service.
