Question

Slow Edit Operations

Please Adobe, do something for LR Classic. My laptop is not so good, ok (MacBook Pro Retina, 2,5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 6 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram) but it did not suddently become as bad in a few month. From version 12 every thing is so slow, even with SmartPreview. Include without filters, no detail nor effect corrections nor Transform, so only with basic, curve and color, it becomes so quick slow, it is almost impossible to work... someting a few seconds to see the change. (I've already checked and done all optimisations. No difference using SmartPreview or Full Raw [not enormous raw, 6240x4160]).

I'm waiting for each Update with impatience, and for each Update, yes I discover new features than could be great, but disepointment: I can barely work the basic. 😭

"I'm waiting for each Update with impatience, and for each Update, yes I discover new features than could be great, but disepointment: I can barely work the basic."

The simple fact is that if you want the enhanced features, you need a computer capable of running them.

If you can't or won't update your machine, your best bet is to stay with an older, arguably less capable version of LightRoom - there's little else to be done, because although LightRoom code can probably be refined a little in order to improve performance (12.4 is quicker than 12.3, for example), there's a lower limit to what's possible on an underpowered machine.

These new features you talk about do require more computer power than older features. That could be part of the reason Lightroom Classic seems to be running slower.

There's plenty of suggestions here in the forum, including trying turning the GPU on/off in Lightroom Classic to see if that helps; reset the preference file; optimize the catalog; and so on. Thank you for your reply. As already said, I already checked and followed every instructions to optimize performances.
I understand that new automatic features can require more computer power. But as I said it becomes slow include with basic modules use (Basic, Tobe Curve, Calibration, HSL/Color, Color Grading) - include using Smart Views (that have now very bad quality. I can see big square sometimes). If I add Detail and Effect I have to wait a few seconds to see a small change in contrast or something else. With one or two Mask I can wait maybe 10-15 seconds. So almost impossible to work. I will have to use older version until I would be able to buy I new laptop. In fact if I would not be so used to use LR, I would try to use an other Software.

The little information that you've provided suggests that you're using a 2015 MacBook Pro. If that is the case, then your GPU specs are, at best,

  • 2.5GHz - 512GB
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching

If above is true, then you're system barely meets the minimum requirements for LrC 12, and there's little that can be done to improve performance on the computer.

Maybe you could provide a copy of your System Info as obtained from the LrC Help > System Menu item as shown in attached screenshot. It would also be helpful if you could indicate how much space you have available on the drive containing the LrC catalog, and photos if it's not internal to the computer.
