Slow Import

Recently I've noticed a significant decrease in import speed. I used to be able to import 5000 raw files in MAYBE 10 minutes. Now to import that many photos takes an hour. I was also able to view and sift through photos while the import process was continuing with no issue. Now if i even look at Lightroom while it is importing, it freezes and quits responding. I leave it for a moment and it gains back brain function and continues the import process. Ive moved everything to a single disk in case there was some odd musical chair thing happening with the files across various hard drives. Ive tried importing to other drives to see if that affects speed but i notice no difference.  I tried deleting lightroom and redownloading it but that doesnt seem to have done anything either. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
