Star rating only showing edited images, not all selected images

I have always used the star rating to sort my photos - randomly the star function is only showing me edited photos except when I access the whole folder, and all the photos are still there and I can see that they're selected. How can I change it so I can see all my selected/starred images when I click on a star, not just the starred images that are edited?
