Subfolders are not displaying photos

I am using Lightroom Classic CC version 8.1 on an iMac using macOS Mojave version 10.14.2. My photos are organized into a hierarchy of folders (date/year/topic). Starting January 7, only the lowest tier of folders displays the number of photos and the thumbnails. Any of the higher level folders indicate "0" photos with the message "subfolders not shown."

Some troubleshooting steps:

1. Try doing the menu command Library > Show Photos In Subfolders a few time. If that command is checked and you're still not seeing photos in the subfolders, then:

2. Reset LR's preferences: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/
