Suspected massive memory leaks when creating HDR panoramas

I am on Windows 10, running current LR Classic. I was processing photos from my vacation, making a lot of HDRs, panoramas and HDR panorams and noticed unusual number of freezes.

It turned out the HDR processing is ok, panorama processing seems ok too, but the "HDR panorama" is not ok: The function finishes, however it leaves a lot of allocated memory - visible in Process Explorer in both Private Byts and Working Set columns. The function eventualy finishes, but subsequent execution of another HDR compositing is prone to freeze/crash.

Creating a HDR pano with 2 views by 3 exposures (i.e. 6 photos total) can increase the memory usage by 5 GB, but for larger panoramas it can be 10 GB easily.

My system is pretty powerful (Intel 12700, RTX 3080, 64GB RAM), but that is too much 🙂 I have to restart LR regularly because of that.

Investigation continues: The offending file is %AppData%\Local\Temp\cr_sdk_<some number>.tmp

After LR memory (artificial?) limit is hit, which is around 39,5 GB on my system, this file starts to grow... as I am writing this it is almost 60 GB in size.

Also after running a few of HDR panorama functions, there are about 160 GB of new data on my primary disk, again not released. I believe some of it is a cache, because re-running the same HDR pano is fast sometimes.

Surprisingly, I cannot detect where the data is: Even running FolderSize with admin privileges doesn't reveal any huge folders and pagefile.sys and other system files are under 60 GB.

It seems to me that this is some system allocation, because LR never exceeds 39 GB of allocated RAM, no matter what I do. It probably goes to disk somehow then, just not in a typical fashion (wild speculation 🙂 )

Hmm, now it seems that even HDRs alone increase the memory usage _sometimes_. After doing a series of HDR merges consisting of 5 photos, the memory usage of LR after each HDR merge was something like this:

6 GB on start
18 GB after first HDR merge (it never goes down btw)
