Question

Sychronise on Lightroom

Dear Brains,

When trying to synchronise my folders in Lightroom I am told that 16,000 need to be imported and yet when I try and do this none appear. I understand extra large files can cause issues but there are maybe only about 30 that are too big for LR.

My images are stored on an external disk array - Pegasus R8 ie 8 drives with a total of 32tb storage. I have around 500,000 images but recently the Pegasus was rapidly filling up.  I had these catalogued as 10 sub folders (1A - 10A) each with individual sub categories eg Landscapes. As I only had a few Tb left I took all the video files on Folder 10A and over a period of days have been moving them to another series of disks in a Drobo enclosure, using either drag and drop (I know) or moving within Lightroom. Either way it thas taken an days.

If I now try and sync either my entire Folder or one of the individually numbered folders (1A - 9A) it will tell me anything from 100 - 16000 images need imported. Fine so far as I have always periodically synced my folder with no issues. This time however when I try and import them, there are seemingly none to import. I have only moved video files from the folder 10A and, as I try and free up some more space, been deleteing image from within LR.

I would be grateful if anyone knows how to find and catalogue the missing images assuming they are indeed missing.

Thanks All,

Chris

When trying to synchronise my folders in Lightroom [Classic] I am told that 16,000 need to be imported and yet when I try and do this none appear. I understand extra large files can cause issues but there are maybe only about 30 that are too big for LRC.

This happens because the folder(s) you are trying to synchronize have 16,000 photos, but they have already been imported into Lightroom Classic. So LrC will not import them again, it is doing the right thing. Importing the photos again would be a bad thing to do anyway.

It occurs to me that perhaps synchronize is the wrong tool, but I don't see a clear explanation of why you think synchronizing is needed. In your last paragraph, you mention missing photos, but no explanation is given, and its not even clear what "missing" means in your text.

Thanks for your reply,

I will try and clarify.

I tend to use Synchronise as a way to recatalogue my files that I may have moved around outside of Lightroom. Not best practice I know.  I was running out of room on my main storage drives so I opted for adding a new Drobo (4 x 2Tb) enclosure to house my video files.

When I run Synchronise it states that with about 50 files  "The movie files contain no video frames" and are then not catalogued on Lightroom. They are however on my hard drive(s) and open and play as normal. Strangely in one case it is .mov files that are not recognised and in another it is MP4.

My other issue is that quite a number of the video files that are catalogued have no previews. Lightroom may say it is building Previews but after 4 hours the scroll bar remains unmoved.

The Drobo also houses my Dropbox folder and some FCP (Final Cut Pro) bundles. The latter do not get catalogued in Lightroom. Lightoom says it holds 1,755 but if I run Synchronise it comes up with that there are about 15,000 missing but it does not import them even though I can see them in the filders and subfolders.

Hope that makes more sense.

Moving photos/ videos to a different disk — see "Part 2 — Updating Folder Location" of this document.

Synchronizing, if it works, is a poor choice that imports the files as brand new photos that LrC has never seen before, not what you want.

Sorry folks the issue is most likely related to having a Dropbox Folder within the library. However I also find that when trying to import some video files, that play in Quicktime etc, Lightroom states there are no frames associated with the video and will not import. Older and more recent video files work fine. I also find that previews for some videos are not available.
