Question

Synchronize and Import adding photos from another drive

My father died. I copied his catalog (which is a mess) and his files to an external drive. I attach the drive to my PC, launch the catalog, Update Folder Location... to let LrC know that the dirve letter is now F:

Once I've relocated all of the folders, I try to synchronize one of the top level folders on F: and it finds about  7,000 missing unimported photos. If I hit import it imports WAY more than 7,000, including photos on the C: drive (I stopped it at about 30,00). Same happens if I go to the folder and choose Add in the import dialog box.

I figured that there must be a symbolic link in one of the directories but if I bring up a command prompt (as Admin) and dir /AL /S f:\ I get File Not Found

I'm on Windows 11 (LrC 13.3).

Any ideas?

Why does this information imply that there is a symbolic link? Could it be there really are that many unimported photos? Could it be that you are trying to import from the C: drive the previews that LrC creates? You don't want to import those.

I can right click and choose Synchronize on a folder on on the F drive and it shows me that there are about 7,710 unimported photos in the folder.

I make sure that the Show Import dialogue before importing is checked and click synchronize.

I let the import dialogue sit until the number of photos to be imported (in the upper right of the middle pannel) is stable. It shows 184,035 photos to be imported (don't import suspected duplicates is checked)

I can right click on photos in the grid and choose Show in Finder and the photos that it is ready to import are on the C: and 😧 drives, not in the folder I am synchronizing. Not sure what is going on with the one where the path begins with "Start Backup," perhaps that is a clue?

Missing photos is not fixed by synchronizing folders! That option is meant for something else. Here's how to fix missing images and missing folders:

Sorry, I should have said "it finds about 7,000 unimported photos."
