Synchronize Folder does not recognize changed images

We have a collection of photos on a LAN server which were imported into LRC.

We've been using an external editor to crop those images post-import.

It appears that the Synchronize Folder command does not recognize that the image was changed, and does not update the image previews.

I found a way around this by renaming the image, synchronizing (which picks up the changes), and then renaming back to original name.

Is this expected behaviour for LRC? And, if so, other than the kludge above, is there any way to force-reimport in LRC ?

Hey, @randyp95906516. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll clarify this for you. Your workflow is unique.

Lightroom generates a preview database for the images you import. Any changes made to the original document without Lightroom are not updated and won't appear as part of the synchronization action, as it does not trigger a recreation of existing previews.

So, when you rename and sync the folders, Lightroom necessarily re-imports and renders a fresh preview of the source image.

As a test, in the Library Module, go to Library (menu item at the top) > Preview > Render 1:1 previews after you make changes to the source document to make Lightroom render a new preview based on the source image. Try this with a smaller batch, as 1:1 previews are highest in quality and take significantly more disk space and processing power.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

This brings up the question: why use an external editor to crop, when LrC will do that ?

Division of labor. The person using lightroom is not the person who takes the photos, puts them on the server, and crops them. (saves $$ on an extra Adobe license)
