Question

Syncing metadata syncs ALL data

Hi.

I have recently decided to go CC to sync images from my mobile devices into LR Classic.  I have about 13,000 images and videos synced from iOS into Lr Classic.  Two days ago, sync was complete / "up to date" in Lr Classic and on iOS.  That took weeks to achieve, btw.

The issue I noticed is that Lr Classic wants to sync changes back to the cloud all the time and it is slooooowww.  The REAL issue here is that I recently selected all ~13,000 images and added the Yellow Label to them.  Lr Classic then set about syncing the label change back to the cloud.  Well, so far it's been running for 18 hours and only done about 6,000 photos.   I checked my router stats and my PC appears to be maxing out the 9Mbp upload bandwidth of my fibre broadband.  The only thing running is Lr.  So, I used Resrource Monitor to check the Lightroom process, and it is in fact sending GBs of data an hour - I assume from the bandwidth pattern that it is sending not only the metadata change, but also sycing the entire image file.

Why would Lr need to send GB of data just to update a colour label change?  This feels like a massive bug and waste of bandwidth.

I have observed similar behavior with Keywords - to my understanding, keywords do not actually sync accross the cloud so its curious that changing keywords in Lightroom Classic generates a resync of the images.

I was really hoping a dev or a product manager would jump in here.

Did I argue that it was a poor choice? No. Classic's sync is a bolt on and that's the reason for the Lightroom ecosystem, where sync is native.

As a software architect and developer of 25+ years experience, I cannot agree with you that this is "working as designed".

As I said in my post, the files are already "created".  They are already synced and in both places.

If an object has 1000 properties and you are trying to keep them in sync in two places, if one property changes, you do not need to send all 1000 properties to the other place to stay synchronised.  If no image data changes in a photo, only a label, you just send the label to the other place (in this case, the Adobe cloud) - you do NOT send the image data because that hasn't changed.  Sending 3-4MB instead of a few KB to effect that synchronisation would be a GROSSLY poor design choice, if in fact it is "as designed" as you say.

As Classic syncs Smart Previews, it's definitely not entire files. The files still have to be created and uploaded and that takes time and bandwidth. As to why it's not syncing only metadata, I have no idea, but this still would be classed as 'As Designed' and not a bug.
