Question

Syncing Presets

I had presets on a previous computer that I spent years perfecting. That computer unfortunately fried when I spilled coffee on it. My question is, do I have to start over with my presets or is there a way to retrieve the old ones that were in Lightroom to my new computer via Lightroom or cloud?

I know I should have backed them up but I didn't so here I am.

Thanks in advance.

All of the various preset types are stored on the hard drive.

If you can still read data from the old hard drive, via an external USB housing or other method, it is a simple matter of copy-paste using a file browser.

Do you have access to your old LR catalog? If so, you can manually recover the preset settings. Find a photo to which you applied a preset. In Develop's History panel, find the history step where you applied the preset.  By clicking on that history step and the preceding step, you can see which settings the preset changed and their values.

If you're familiar with command-line tools, you can make that process a little easier by using the free Show Catatalog Metadata plugin. Click on the preset history step, run the plugin's Show command, and copy the results into the file "after.txt". Then click on the previous history step, run the Show command, and copy the results into the file "before.txt".  Diff the two files to see precisely which settings the preset changed.

Do you have the hard drive those presets were stored on? And is it still functional?

If not then they are gone.
