The file could not be found

Hi guys,

I tried to look for an answer before posting but didn't find anything on this particular issue I'm facing. Let me explain.

I have a subscription that includes 1TB of online storage with Adobe. What I want to achieve here is that when I import photos in Lightroom Classic, they are available online. To do so I import them in collections that are synced with Lightroom. That works fine because I can see them on my lightroom cc mobile application.

However, as soon as I disconnect the hard drive where they are originally stored and imported from, I get a "The file could not be found" message when I try to develop them.

If I import my pictures from the Lightroom CC application I do not have to keep my hard drive connected to work on them.

Any idea how I could make it work from Classic?

Thank you!

In order to have your  images available online you must create first create a synced collection. Lr Classic will sync smart previews of  your images which will allow you  to continue to  edit on any device that has the  Lr app installed and you are logged in to your account. Once you open your  Classic catalog, edits will be synced  back to your originals. If  you want  to edit in Classic  and not  be  tethered to your external  hard drive make smart previews. You can make smart previews one at a time, upon  import or via the application menu under Library>Previews. Keep in mind that if  you make smart previews of every image the file size can get quite large and take up a  lot of disk space.

That was a fast reply, thanks a lot. I was able to build a smart preview and it worked fine!

I just realized that I indeed have quite a huge file on my computer called MobileDownloads.lrdata. Is it where smart previews are stored? What would happen if I'd delete the whole file? I guess I would have to "reconnect" my library pictures with the images original locations?

Thank you

MobileDownloads.lrdata - this is where the smart previews of your mobile photos are stored. Most likely they are from your phone  unless you import your dslr  images  into your iPad library.
