The file "[filename]" is associated with another photo in the catalog.

Today I opened my catalog and realised that all my images in a few folders became offline. When I click on the exclamation mark and locate the file I get this error message:

The file "[filename]" is associated with another photo in the catalog.

Each file can only be associated with one photo.

If I click the "Show in Library" button, it will show me the same offline image. I tried to search the filename in all photos in my catalog and only this single image is returned. I'm really confused how this has happened and I'm not sure how to resolve this.

Thank you for your help. I restarted Lightroom and the problem is solved. I'm pretty sure this is a bug.

The file "[filename]" is associated with another photo in the catalog.

Each file can only be associated with one photo.

Assuming you are talking about Lightroom Classic (which you didn't say):

You have accidentally imported the photo more than once into LrC. You have to find the other copies of the photo in LrC. Please follow all four of these steps in order and let us know what you find.

1. In the Lightroom Classic Library Module, on the left, under Catalog, click on All Photographs
2. Turn off all filters (Ctrl-L once or twice)
3. Turn off all stacking (Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks)
4. Search for at least one of these photos by file name using the Lightroom Classic Filter Bar

Where are your original files are located? If it's a external hard drive is this drive connected?

Try also resetting the preferences of Lightroom Classic:  How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences (adobe.com)

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:
